The gun demons made me buy a stevens

They are hard to beat for the money. I had my .223 out today again. Loads with IMR 4895 grouped very well but I did find out that using IMR 4064 sucks the big one. Best it would do with those loads was 1.5" at best.

These guns out shoot many of the much more expensive guns I've played with but they sure are cheap looking. But I guess that is their charm so I don't think I'll be painting mine. I want it to be untouched so I can cash in when they become a hot collectors item;)

I've got my eye on one in .308 for a cheap beater gun to loan out. Lightweight, accurate, cheap. I'm thinking of a Legend or Trophy in a DNZ one-piece scope mount. Probably paint that hideous stock in a tan and lay some glass down under the barrel to stiffen it a bit.

So how about some complete pics of this baby, eh?
I've got to paint the Choate plastic stock on my 8x57 sporter and you've given me some cool ideas.

I tried it today! Thanks Spenom!

Then I went to the range again! Shooting off a block of wood, as I didnt want to messs up the paint putting on the Bipod.

Did better with the Bipod but whatever. I had to go buy a Caliper just for this gun!!!!!! LOL!

Well I was planning to take it to the range and get a base line on how this thing shoots before I modify it any further but plans have changed. I took a nasty spill at work and managed to crack 2 rib bones. It hurts to sneeze or cough let alone shoot a 300 win mag! So I decided that I would bed the rifle in my spare time. Also I found this long range shooting simulator on the internet that I downloaded that has classes etc on learning to quickly use mil dot reticule to find ranges and how to shoot in different types of wind and that sort of stuff so it will have to give me my shooting fix for the next few weeks.

Here is a pic of the gun in the stock before bedding. Oh yeah I also sprang for a limb saver because that hockey puck material on the stock that stevens/savage was trying to pass off as a recoil pad was not going to cut it.

Anyone out there got any tips on bedding a stevens? This will be my fist attempt at bedding a rifle so any and all information is appreciated. I have heard something about "floating the safety" but have no idea what that is meant to mean?

P.S. If you have a rib injury don't look at the following picture, it is funny enough that it is actually very painful!

Hey did you hear about those guys that take carbon fiber arrows and bed them into the stock somehow? It's supposed to be good?

Yeah in another thread a guy was telling us about how to use foam gorilla glue to fix them into place and then skim coat epoxy over the gorilla glue. I am going to bed the rifle and then give it a go.

So I bought the new .223 yesterday, courtesy of Smacdonald! Also picked up a couple boxes of Remington UMC form Bass Pro. Gotta be the cheapest stuff you can buy, and we all know how much I love that. So to recap Cheapest rifle I could find, Cheapest scope you can get(Bushnell Savage package), and finally the Cheapest ammo I can get!

And the results:

Spenom I wanna see the range report!!!!!
Now I just need a better scope, and we will see what she can do!
Anyone use a Bushnell Banner 6-18 x 50, or a 6-24 x 40! I am thinking of going with the 40mm just for ease of mounting with my current rings! I really don't wanna spend a whole lot. Sorry for the Hijack!

No worries on the hi-jack action, I am loving the stevens info throw down. I would love to provide a range report but I have 2 busted ribs and there will be no shooting of 300 win mags for me until they have healed. But nice shooting there mlehtovaara I hope mine follows in the same foot steps.

There is a way to stiffen up that stock to make it fell better than a lot of custom stocks. I am working on a drawing to illustrate how but you can PM me for the details.

Has anyone tried JB Weld bedding? I heard someone tried it, basically rough up the inside of the stock with sandpaper and lay down the JB Weld, then put wax paper between it and the action when you screw it back in. Leave and it should harden really nicely, then pull it out and make sure the barrel is floating.

Just something I've heard, seems a lot easier than glassing. Although if you glass it with a kit, you could also get some glass tape and epoxy that in place in the fore stock to stiffen it all at once.

Well I was thinking about how the stock flexing could be an issue when using a bipod so I decided to add another sling swivel further back to make this less of an issue. I think it will work out pretty good. I still plan to strengthen the fore end, but I just figured I would do this as well.

I walked into wholesale sports in Naniamo last night and they had only one Stevens Model 200 in 7mm Rem Mag.

These rifles seem to sell well as every place I check so far seems to have only one left.

BTW thanx for the advice and PMs on finding the calipers folks. :)

Hi guys I have bought a stevens 200 in 270 .after hearing that these rifles are very accurate.what I would like to know has anyone shortened the length of pull on the tupperware stock.being 5 ft 6in tall i find the LOP to long and would be interested in any ideas on how i might be able to refit the butt plate after i shorten the stock.thanks

Remove factory recoil pad (throw it in the trash), remove the little piece of styrofoam that is found in the buttstock (throw in the trash), cut to proper LOP, fill buttstock with expandable foam, glue (epoxy) a Limbsaver recoil pad on, and you're done.
