1911 Modifications Thread:

Hummmm very interesting. Did you made that pair of target grip? Looks like the NP-29 has a lot of potential. would that be hard to opearate the mag release?

I re-did my norinco with all Wilson Combat innards - beavertail, springs, trigger, mainspring, hammer..etc..and VZ grips.

Operating the mag release in bullseye matches is a two handed operation and not part of the course of fire, so I have no problems, but it sure wouldn't work for PPC or any discipline that includes mag changes.
Yeah, I make target grips - have done so for 30+ years, mostly I just supply Alberta since they are fitted to individuals.

This is my Norinco 1911A1.

So it is still in progress. The grips are not done, as I am making them myself from an exotic wood (I forgot what it is, I think cocobolo). They are going to be 8mm thick.....I like 'em thick (that's what she said!! ...;) haha)

So that is the reasoning behind the missing grip screws, and the lack of cutouts where needed/sizing issues of the grips.

Has a storm lake 5.5" thread barrel, with 2 port comp. Soon to be installed is a small magwell (trying to keep it clean, and not all hopped up and steroid looking like a competition gun haha). Would love to add a nicer trigger, but it's ok for now.

Not sure what else I will do...I will take better pictures when I am done the grips.

If you like it, cool let me know...if not...build your own! haha kidding.

Emilio, I can let you have for free my ex Norinco Sport three holes trigger ...the one I took it out from my Nork Commander - BTW this it is not alu, it's black metal and is brand new never been used...but you have to pay the shipping if you are not from GVRD area

I would totally take you up on that! (I sent you a PM).

Look VERY closely... hehe, it's there, my camera and the lighting make it invisible! :p

Don't worry, there is a front sight on there. Good eye though!

yea, I watched that yesterday (or the day before) and it was awesome informative, like seriously, my lady was being all "AWW smooches", but I was hooked. He used those stones... There wasn't a specific grit for those.

BUT! if you used 1000 grit paper then it worked for you and I know I can try that... so, THANKS, I appreciate that information

just finished with my Para-Ordnance 16-40 Limited

It has been a year dealing with various issues, but I am now ready to go.

I have added Dawson Magwell, STI mag release extension, honed the power extractor for more positive extraction, milled the safety for a more crisp engagement and disengagement, added an STI plunger spring as well to firm things up on the safety, and blocked the mags for competition. Will be shooting std class with it.

I will next be honing and polishing the sear and hammer. I first need to obtain a stone and sear jog kit. Any suggestions?

Didn't see anybody mentioning Kuhnhausen manuals. Those are bible for all 1911 junkies. I did excellent job first time on my Tanfoglio Witness Custom, on the budget too. Barrel bushing will be first on its way out, factory ones have too big of tolerance. Replace it with compensated bushing (70$ for really good one) and be happy if it needs custom fitting for thats where accuracy lives. If you can locate match grade chain link and custom fit it as well. Then close your eyes, say your prayers and beging compressing slide in the vise and punching slide rails for tight fitting and lapping slide to frame. Install cheap magwell, the one that goes under grips and cost around 20$. Trigger work you can do on your own as well, beware of roundig edges though and spend some time making a jig for accurate sear work. The whole thing may take a few fine evenings and some 200$ for bushing, chainlink and magwell.

Update time... I just overwrote the last thing I posted in here. Gun is finally done (for now :p). Custom hand made grips (By yours truly), Storm lake barrel with 2 comp, 3 hole trigger (courtesy Wolfstrack, thanks man!). Looks nice, probably works nice too! (need to try it out soon).

Anyway, this is how it looks now, and how it will stay for a while.

I just bought a stock Norinco 1911 commander off of the E&E, and I'm interested in getting a few things done to it. I want to put a beavertail grip safety on it, but I'm told there might be a bit of machining required. Can anyone tell me if there are drop-in beavertails?

I've perused the selection at Brownell's site, but I also would like to find out if you can actually import parts from the USA. So far i've only found two canadian shops that sell 1911 parts: Armco and Marstar, however their selection is a bit limited.

I'm looking to put in a skeletonized hammer, beavertail safety (drop in if possible!), ambi safety, maybe a magwell, and eventually put in higher-profile sights, like a novak-style setup. I know that some work will need to be done for the sights, but I'm hoping to use drop-in parts wherever possible.

Order the Brownells 1911 catalog. It's free.

Actually, I would suggest that you order the regular catalog too - it's well worth the money - but there is absolutely no reason for you not to order the free 1911 catalog.

Brownells has a very large selection that cannot be appreciated simply by viewing the website. There are products found there that you won't see on the website; they are grouped together in a way that makes perusal easy and natural; there is more information about many of the products. Even if you plan to buy from a Canadian retailer, reading the Brownells catalog will educate you as to what is available out there and, therefore, what you are looking for.

Most of their products can be exported to you. They do have all of the parts that you want, including drop-in beavertails, and all of the tools that you'll need.

Get the catalog.
