1911 Modifications Thread:

I've decided to do a trade with a CGN member via the E&E to get a 1911 Norinco Sport model. I'd like to armacoat the frame and slide, but I have no access to a sandblaster. I'm thinking of renting one out or taking it to a shop nearby. Does anyone have a connection in Vancouver for this sort of thing? Any help would go a long way. Also, i need to degrease the frame & slide before I begin. Can someone reccomend a good degreaser?

Thanks in advance.

Not really a modification, more of a field fix. I was tearing a Springfield apart awhile ago, cause I had nothing better to do, and accidentally dropped the mainspring retaining pin on the floor in my gun room.

Looked for about an hour, couldn't find it so I stuck a round toothpick in its place, just to get it back together. Promptly forgot about the thing, put about 700 rounds through the pistol the next two times I took it out, and the other day I stepped on the pin when walking across the room.

I know its not a part that gets submitted to great stress, but its an example (albeit a dumb one) of how user-friendly these pistols are. Although I'm not sure cinnamon toothpicks were ever considered as alternate replacement parts in the 1911's development.

I don't really have anything good to add to the modification thread, mostly I just like to see the 1911 threads at the top of the list.

i just took my commander apart a day ago, cleaned it all up using kerosene and brake cleaner (way too much runny chinese oil), polished a number of areas & parts using 400, 800, and 1500 wet sandpaper (on a flat surface), put on some synthetic 75w-90 gear oil on pivots and synthetic grease on sliding parts, and put it all back together. rattles a lot less, slides a lot nicer, and trigger doesn't feel like it has gravel in it.

polishing done on trigger & guides in frame, frame / slide rails, a few surfaces on the sear & disconnector (though will need to take it apart once more to polish a few more surfaces). shaved off the ugly squared trigger guard using a bench grinder and need to slightly shave the slide release so that it fits into my Fobus holster (it sticks out to far and jabs into the holster). not changing any parts, keeping all stock stuff.

still need to shape the feed ramp since SWC rounds don't feed that well, and fix up the inner part of the slide release since it doesn't rise up to lock the slide back after the last round. the little knob on the inside doesn't extend far enough to catch the follower of the mag. JB Weld to the rescue!

oh, will change the grips to fat wooden ones, but that's about it.

Old Slab sides users.
As an 'Effective Measures Officer' for many years I was commited in carrying the Browning P-35 in 9mm as it chambered the same round as the Sterling SMG.
However being a trooper from WW2 and being trained with the Colt .45 1911-A1 matching the Thompson SMG I can tell you the the 230 grain .45ACP converts a fleeing terrorist to your poccession without fail. The 9mm will likely go clean through but does not have the stopping power of the heavier projectile.

If you wish for the ultimate 'stopper' try a 250 grain Winchester rifle bullet sized to .451 infront of 3.5 grains of Bullseye powderbut NOT in a NORINCO.

This load was conceived by my good friend Major. Culver. USMC.

Cheers.

How difficult is it to replace 1911 sights? I'm thinking of options for my soon-to-arrive 1911 Nork sport model..

I replaced mine. You just need a small hammer, a nylon punch, a vice (with some leather shims to protect the surface), and some lock-tite. There are videos on youtube that show you step by step. - Good luck!

watch out for the red loctited sights, they will make you go nutz.

New guy who just bought new Norinco 1911 A1. Trigger pull is so heavy and uneven it makes accuracy difficult. There are no gunsmiths in my area. Any suggestions to smooth out the trigger?

Thanks.
