1911 Modifications Thread:

Can anyone tell me who can do a Springfield Pro shop quality checkering here in Canada...I am pretty close to just sending the gun to the pro shop and paying all the fees due to a lack of talent up here ...I need 20lpi and a high hand mod under the trigger guard...

Frames? They are Dlask, picked up on the ee a couple months ago. I'm using all Wilson internals/small bits, just waiting for my last couple orders to come up from Brownells. $100 limit per order is killing me! Mixing them with old parts, I want to build them to look traditional. Right now I'm leaning toward pre-a1, which means building up the frame spurs and filling in the trigger relief cuts/magwell bevel.

Grrr. I thought we could buy no hassle from Brownell's. I placed an order and was sent an email full of legalese and documentation to complete. Cancelled the order.

Where do you guys get your parts?

**EDIT** ok so if I keep it under $100 it's no hassle? My mistake, I thought it was $200 and ordered accordingly.

There is more to it than that.

The manufacturer of each product must be registered, just as the exporter of the product must be registered. Some of the products in their inventory may be made by a company that has not registered, so their product(s) are not exportable (to you). Some products, including firearms, firearm receivers, firearm bolts and slides, and firearm barrels each require an export permit. And the total wholesale value of firearms parts in a given order cannot exceed US$100. or an export permit is required.

As you have learned, Brownells is very helpful and they will walk you through the process.

Thanks. Actually no, they weren't. I called and was put thru to voice mail, where I left a very detailed message including my order # and a change I wanted made, questions about the export limit, and left my ph# requesting they call me back as I would be on the road for 2 days with no email access. They just emailed me the bunch of stuff requesting permits so I replied 'just cancel the order'.

How difficult is it to replace 1911 sights? I'm thinking of options for my soon-to-arrive 1911 Nork sport model..

I recently got a 1911 nork sport model, had it in a vise and hammered away for a long while with a punch at the front sight (dovetailed). DIDNT BUDGE!

Contemplating just grinding it off and putting in a new replacement one. anyone know the best place to get replacement sights??

EDIT: just checked out fusion, they have all sorts of sights

I'm looking for some literature on building/modifying 1911s. Can anyone point me in the right direction of some good, in depth books on this subject? Something that covers various aspects such as: fitting frames, slides, and small parts, as well as the basics of tuning. Any help would be appreciated. I'm building two pistols based on Dlask frames, and since I've never done this before, I'd like to learn the proper methods instead of hacking them together (in case anyone who reads this saw my S&W .22 revolver thread :)).

My latest project:

The parts are a mix:

Dlask
-Trigger
-Sear
-Safety
-Hammer
-MSH

Wilson
-Barrel Bushing
-Slide Stop

The grips are Alumagrips, and the whole piece has been dehorned. While it was a little unnerving to take a file to a gun, I must say I like the feel!

The finish is matte black and was done by Arma-Coat; I don't have the patience to be good at finishing!
