1911 Modifications Thread:

IMO, not a butcher...but a genius. I posted in your original thread on this revolver, I say again, "WELL DONE". Good luck on the retro 1911.

This is a S&W barrel I cut down and recrowned, all with a hacksaw and files. I had a few people tell me I was a butcher, but it shoots as tight as I've seen.

As long as you aren't doing it to a classic 1911. If so, may your file slip and scar the entire pistol.;)

Hey guys, I want to mod my 1911 but I don't want to make any permanent alterations to the frame or any part of the gun. I'd like to add the following parts. Preferably drop-in or requiring very minor fitting to the parts themselves.

- beaver tail safety
- commander or similar looking hammer
- one piece flared magwell/main spring housing.
- extended safety
- lightweight trigger

I want to fit these parts on my Springfield 1911 GI. Could you guys point me in the right direction to find such parts? So far Wilson Combat seems to have all that I want. Does a Canadian dealer carry their products or can I order through brownells, etc?

Thanks,
Alex

I have ordered lots of Wilson parts from brownells without issue. Not sure if there's a Canadian dist.

Hey guys what parts do i need in order to remove the grip safety.

Remove the mag, drift out the msh pin. Slide it down just enough to clear the grip safety. #### hammer. Engage thumb safety to midway point and push out from opposite side. Remove grip safety.

Old post I know, you probably got it figured out by now. Its raining, I'm bored, and I'm upping my post count. :D

Has anybody tried the s&a ez-fit grip safety? I want to put one on an enhanced government model series 80 with the ghetto duckbill. Any pics of results mayhaps?

I have a Para 1911 G.I Expert to which i am very fond of...however one bit of modification i was thinking about doing was installing a full length guide rod. More or less for some ease on disassembly and cleaning.

So questions are, one is that simple to do? Where could i find one, preferably stainless steel.

The other Mod is more of related to the mags for the Para, i have heard mixed things and that getting some chip mccormick magazine's are a good idea. Can those be bought anywhere here in Canada or is it not worth it at all?

I think you will find that the Full Length Guide Rod (FLGR) will make it harder to diassemble. Cleaning isn't an issue with either sized rod.

The guide rod is a drop-in part, so you don't need to worry about fitting it.

Dlask makes/sells a 2-piece stainless FLGR. A little pricey, compared to the similar thing from Brownells. But once you factor in shipping, it might be comparable.

Yes. I don't like them, but they are easy to try. <http://www.canadiangunnutz.com/forum/showthread.php?t=312662>

Brownells. <http://www.brownells.com/>

The Brownells 1911 catalog is free. <http://www.brownells.com/.aspx/pid=23960/Product/1911_CATALOG>

I suggest Wilson Combat Wilson-Rogers magazines. <http://www.brownells.com/.aspx/pid=16398/avs|Manufacturer_1=WILSON%20COMBAT/Product/1911_AUTO_WILSON_ROGERS_MAGAZINE>

They cost more, and they're worth it.

Kind of a modification, I like it more anyhoo. I bought this Springfield a couple years ago with a drop in beavertail grip safety. Always hated that part, but the trigger/hammer/sear job on it was so nice that I couldn't bear to swap back in a spur hammer to work with a standard grip safety (and I've never done a great trigger job so I probably would have botched something up).

Yesterday I had enough so I modded an old GI grip safety to work with the current hammer.

Still needs a bit of filing and polishing, but a huge improvement over the previous beavertail (above pistol).

Today I figured "why stop there" and tried flush cutting the barrel. Fitted a tighter barrel bushing as the original had quite a bit of play in it, we'll see if it makes a difference.

Old bushing, deflected by spring/plug pressure:

New bushing, snug with no play:

I think I'll flush up the slide stop pin next. These aren't necessarily "performance enhancing" mods, just wanted to see if I could do them.
