1911 Modifications Thread:

Yup it will have to be shallow. I'm familiar with the guttersnipe but want a smoother lower profile finished product. Even with a shallow gutter I think with some practice a person could become proficient (at least within the limitations of the design). I realize its not the type of sight you'd want on a bullseye pistol, its more of a case of wanting to try something different. Another option would be to checker or serrate a line on the top of the slide. This would eliminate the removal of material above the lugs. It would more or less be a reference line for sighting along. Again, practice and familiarity with how this specific pistol shoots would help. An easy way to find out would be to use a marker to simulate the gutter/whatever and take it to the range and test it out. Find out where the pistol is shooting and find out how consistent I can be. If I can't maintain any kind of consistency then I save myself the time before "ruining" the slide.

I'm not usually very "pimpy" with my pistols (except for my nickel RIA with pearl grips) but figured I'd throw this on my guinea pig Springfield to jazz it up a bit. Yeah I know its not performance-enhancing, and its not really a "mod". Just something to do.

And yes I know the pistol is filthy.

Hey Everyone,

I just recently acquired a NP29 and im looking to do some upgrading myself over the summer as a project. I was looking into upgrading the following:

Wilson Combat Adjustable Trigger
Titanium Strut
Wilson Value Hammer
Wilson Value Sear
Nowlin Recoil spring
Nowlin HD firing pin spring
Nowlin Hammer Spring
Nowlin Match grade sear spring
(Am i missing anything? maybe even replacing the norc controls too)

I was told the 1911 upgrading process is very much handfitted and theres no such thing as drop in (unless we are talking about springs). As a beginer with no prior experience, how hard will this task be?

Im also looking to either armacoat or hard chroming the pistol after its done.

What is wrong with your np-29? Will all those parts make it better or will you create an unsafe pistol because you have no experience fitting a new sear?

What a coincidence...

I'm a new Norc 1911 owner too, and I'm contemplating some tinkering of my own. Fortunately for me, the previous owner had the trigger done, so I don't need to mess with the sear.

Luke S is right though, if you're going to fit trigger mech parts yourself you need to really do your research and be very careful. I'm no gunsmith, but one of my shooting buddies is and I'm pretty handy with precision mechanical work, so I haven't got much fear. That being said, sear work is probably the last thing I'll touch. No fun if you ruin the gun, right?

If you really want to do it yourself, read through this whole thread, there are some great links to some very good videos and resources. One video is actually an experienced smith doing a trigger job on a Taurus 1911, and I found it extremely informative. Take note of the special tooling - you need a proper sear jig to set the angle where it engages the hammer or you can very well end up with a gun that will go full auto on you.

Be safe and good luck with your project.

I'm looking for a barrel bushing comp for my norinco np29 9mm 1911. I don't want somthing to big and heavy. I was thinking about a Wilson combat one but they say it's for a 2 piece guide rod and mine is a 1 piece. Should I switch to a two piece? Any suggestions?

yeah Deadman, you can do that, I still have some parts running loose around in my 1911 drawer...LOL
done hard chromed frame by Kotanko last year and the slide blueing done last week.
grips are Brazilian rosewood made by K. Ahrends.
all internals, trigger, MSH, pins etc... have top names: Ed Brown, Wilson, Fusion, Les Baer.
in actual configuration original factory Norinco remain ONLY the slide, frame and the barrel.

Here's a pic with their Chinese cousins...

All the work was done by Joe Dlask - he's a great machinist and a 1911 pro.

  • Ed Brown beavertail grip safeties
  • Stainless Steel mainspring housing and one with a Magwell
  • Cuts for Novak 3 dot Tritium sights
  • Ambi thumb safeties
  • Full one piece guide rods
  • Hex grip screws
  • Dlask skeleton hammers

... Have some trigger work to do next.
Also trying to decide on grips!

Anyone know a good place to get VZ grips? I was going to order from VZ but the $65 grips I want come with a $46 shipping fee.

Phone them and shipping is like $18 if I remember correctly, the online order calculator doesn't calculate anything but priority.
