1911 Modifications Thread:

I have yet to get anything from them. Everything I try and order they can not export. Speed shooters had no problem. It's even cheaper if you order direct from smith and Alexander. But that requires a phone call.

Just got my new STI Trojan .40S&W. Put on my VZ Grips and a magwell with the chainlink backstrap to match the front strap. Amazing gun, super smooth and yet very tight. No rattles.

Latey I have developed a huge among of interest in 1911 design and spent quite a bit of time to read different topic about 1911 mods. I did found there are quite a few people start get their feet wet by stepping into the pool. For those who have did a mod to your 1911, namely Norinco, please post what you have replaced, what parts supplier and part number etc that you have done to your pistol. It might help if you 1911 expert jump in and build up a resource for people who start interest to this platform.

Thanks in advance.

In no way am I a photographer but I wanted to share...

Can't afford a Wilson or Nighthawk and Springfields are impossible to find in this country so here's what I got.

IMG_0805.jpg

Kimber TLE/RL II, polished bushing, Streamlight TLR1s, 10-8 rear sight, Nighthawk Custom G10 grips, STI short trigger for my fetus hands, Ed Brown slide stop lever, removed the Swartz firing pin block pieces from both the frame and the slide, Wilson Combat extra power firing pin return spring, and level 4 tactical grip tape on the side of the frame and under the trigger guard. I'm satisfied with how it is now but may add a magwell later and I'm trying to figure out a way to have checkering underneath the triggerguard with no tools and no knowledge of how to do this.

Ed Brown SS slide release from Brownells. Had to file down the top of the catch because it was just making contact with the slide closed.
Wilson Combat SS mag catch from Brownells. The part was a bit on the rough side but nothing a Dremel and wire brush attachment couldn't fix. Nice and smooth now.
Wilson Combat SS Hex grip screws.
Paintfill from Testors paints.

I figured all SS parts would be the same colour. WRONG! Ed Brown parts are nice and silver while Wilson Combat parts are more grey than silver. STI parts are the same colour as Ed Brown's SS parts. I have a set of ambi SS STI thumb safety but the stock right side SIG grip isn't grooved for the right side thumb safety. If i had my workshop handy, I could easily route a clean channel in 30 sec on my router table but no such luck. I may change out the wood grips for a set of ERGO XT grips.

I got a magwell and lightweight trigger on the way from DLASK. :)

Did some work last night and this morning installing a new trigger from DLASK, an STI ambi safety from Freedom Ventures (great to deal with) and ERGO XT Square grips from Brownells.

Out of the box, the trigger was a bit snug and needed some light work to get it to fit. Some light bending, filing and it fits like a glove. Polished out the bow and it's nice and smooth.

As for the STI ambi safety. Wow, can't say I'm a big fan of this part. Out of the package, you can see it's a pretty sloppy casting job, IMHO. It's not a simple drop in part and I had to do a bit of filing etc to get the part to fit and function normally. Still not as smooth as the original safety and I think it needs some light tweeking ie removing extra flashing around the detent. The flat surface area wasn't flat (just cosmetics) and had a tiny spec of metal from I guess a bad moulding job. I took a file to it and flattened the area and buffed it to get back a brushed steel look. On the back of the left safety part there was a slightly raised piece of flashing so I removed that and filed it flat.

The ERGO XT grip is nice and grippy. Unfortunately the slot on the right grip for the ambi safety was too shallow and would cause the safety to bind when the grip is attached. Some Dremel work on the grip and it fits better but still need some more material to be removed. I have a regular beveled version coming in from One Shot but I got the square version as well for a mag well I picked up from DLASK which is getting shipped out to the folks at Arma Coat to get it parkerized.

Anyhow, here's what she looks like after.

Yay! My eBay and Brownells package came in (took 2wks this time, argh!) yesterday.

Switched out the STI Ambi Thumb safety for a single side Ed Brown thumb safety. Sooo much less work involved fitting it and it's nice and clean out of the package. No excess flashing or injection points to clean up etc and the satin finish matches the hammer and slide stop/release.

Also changed out the mag release catch catch lock to a stainless hex nut version which you can't see in the pic.

Got my mother-of-pearl inlay Punisher grips from an eBay auction. Nice snug fit BUT it's a bit on the thick side and could be a problem for peeps with small hands. The top of the grip is a bit high so the thumb safety does not disengage properly. So I'm left to either replace the thumb safety with the smaller OEM Sig version or sand down the grip but will have to repaint and laquer it or just buy another 1911 to doll up.

Waiting for my magwell to come in from refinishing from Arma Coat. Hopefully sometime this week.

Got rid of the Punisher grips 'cause they're too tall ie the thumb safety doesn't fully disengage and replaced them with a set of ERGO XTR. Installed a Dlask magwell that was parkerized by Arma-Coat.
