I purchased what was said to be a Russian 1951 SKS unreferbished unissued and unfired arm it has all matching numbers I have not fired it yet and there are no wear marks at all on this rifle, bolt is silver and it does look new. Here’s my problem the safety catch rotates stiffly to on and off ok but there is no click it is stiff but there is tension from just being tight as there is no safety spring in my trigger group I did not take the trigger group apart just took it out of the rifle for cleaning. On you tube there is a video which shows a spring and when the safety is engaged it clicks as there is spring tension and clicks when safety is disengaged. Mine came with no such safety spring. Can you help and can you supply me with one. I have notified the person who sold me this SKS and I know he has a good reputation and will probably remedy this problem for me, but just in case i need a plan B. It is item No. 43 in the pictured diagram. Has anyone else encountered this problem??
I appreciate your attention in this matter.

I have had several Russian SKS's over the years and some had definate safety on off click and some did not. I believe this is normal between different years. The two that I have now are Russian refurbs 1952, there is no click on or off, just tension.

SKS has a safety?? Don't you just shoot til you run empty? ;)

Kidding aside, all my SKS safeties have a very solid "click". Sure the spring (or parts of) is not rattling around somewhere in the stock? When operating properly, they seem pretty solid

This has nothing to due with the question you ask. The issue that you are facing is the fact that the spring located in the stock does not provide enough tension to the trigger assembely. There for not giving you the "Click" feel. No really biggy and it will still shoot fine.

Satain you missed the point there is no safety spring at all-period in the trigger group, and the spring for the safety is not located in the stock but is supposed to be in the trigger assembly, check out the parts schematic it is part no. 43.

No its not in the trigger group at all.
You would be able to see it if it was there and I don't trust the safety when it can be rolled off when just friction held, I think that's why it was designed with the spring tension, if you sling it on your back and it gets caught on something or you put it down on your kit it gets moved who's to say when its safe or not. Point is its supposed to be there and its not so now I hope the person on Gunntuz I bought it from sends me the part when he reads his mail.
I'm certain he will as he has a very excellent reputation and thats why I bought from him.

Safety Spring

I also have a 51, it does not have a safety spring either.

I can't find where I got the info but from what I remember reading is that the spring was added later, perhaps 52 or 53, but that is a guess, someone will have the details I am sure.

Check out one of the photos on this page. It shows the safety spring not included in the early Russian trigger groups.

Yes, I do relieaze that there is 1 on certain models. But he is reffering to the "Click" feeling. This can be achieved buy increasing the tenstion placed on the trigger group to allow the safety arm to snap into place. My 1950 Russian dosn't have this spring and does do this when I place it in my fiberglass stock but does not in ot's orignal stock due to the lack of preasure from the stock spring.

That's the photo. I think he wants to put that spring in regardless, but I'm not sure it was meant to fit or would have to be fitted with the older trigger. The trigger pin holds it in place and I can testify it's tight with the later triggers. IMO, just leave it alone as long as it works or like Satain suggests, get a stiffer stock spring to increase tension.

Wow you learn something everyday! Thanks boys this is very interesting and who woulda thunk it . This rag is a wealth of information. I heard back from the person who sold it to me so I'm sure he will be interested in this as well, and hopes that he doesn't view me as a pest, but now heres a question.
Can I take a latter trigger group housing and replace, drop it in as I feel a little vulnerable with the safety lever with no spring tension,if I can I will order one from either the dealer I bought this from or maybe from Westie's
Thanks again for the knowledge.

My 53 has no click either, but there is also no play. Its very stiff and lets off a little when it lands, but no click.

I bought the chinese one for this reason,,,definite click between the on and off position, the russian one I handled was stiff enough that it wouldnt move on its own but I liked the feel of the chinese one better.

Thanks guys, mine has no wobble and is stiff as hell, just no click, and my dealer has offered for me to send it back and he would give me another. But I have found out through info on this subject they came this way. I will keep it and I must comment that my dealer has super customer service.I will keep her as she is a virgin.
Thakns to all - questions answered and am more knowledgeable.
