Mods, we need a sticky on this.

1) All centerfire semi's (rifles and shotguns) must have an 18.5" or longer barrel to be non-restricted.

2) All manual action centerfire (rifles and shotguns) and all rimfire long guns (semi's and manual action) can be any barrel length above 106mm, but it cannot be cut to that length, it must be manufactured at the short length.

3) If you are cutting a barrel down on a manual action centerfire long gun or any rimfire long gun (semi's included), it must be 18" long or longer when finished. Shorter becomes a prohibited gun. If cutting down a semi centerfire barrel, 18.5" is the limit.

4) All long guns, centerfire or rimfire, semi or manual action, must also be longer than 26" OAL in their shortest configuration to avoid being classified as restricted.

....I'm not a doctor, but 106mm is hardly 4 1/4"..

Isn't that the minimum barrel length for handguns? A handgun with a barrel less than that length is a 12(6) prohib, and detached, separate from a registered 12(6) pistol, the barrel is a prohibited device.
Is there a section of the law referring to any rifle barrels being prohibited devices?

"...it's closer to 4 3/16"..." 105mm or 4.1" and the actual measurement doesn't matter. It's what the manufacturer says it is. I'd bet the idiots are crying about Ruger's 4.2" barrels too.

What is your point? The regs are specified in metric, not imperial. If you ever got into a serious dispute with the authorities about it, they will measure in metric. The 4-1/4" number is a conversion from 106mm, not the other way around.

If it bothers you, the actual minimum semi barrel length is 470mm (18.503"), and the actual minimum OAL is 660mm (25.984"). 106mm is 4.173" if it matters. The regs also say any handgun with a barrel that is 105mm or less, so in reality, anything longer than 105mm (4.134") is not prohibited.

I was also partly wrong on #4, if you alter any long gun and the OAL goes below the 660mm limit, it becomes prohibited, not restricted. If it is manufactured at the short length or you put a manufactured short barrel on it and go under the limit, then it would be restricted.
