Bushmaster ACR

Eugene Stoner solved the problem 55 years ago but people insist on re-inventing the wheel!

It's funny when you go on the American gun forums, they make the simple gas piston system seem like the newest almost magical development in small arms, when in fact the first self-loaders of the early 20th century were gas-piston guns including the very first crude Browning "potato-digger" MG. Americans gun owners are very malleable to marketing.

But it wasn't Stoner's idea, he copied the Swedes and their AG-42.

FN - despite the marketing hype, the Mk16S is made in Belgium, they ship them to FNMI in SC and they add US made furniture, strip the thumbhole stock and the other stupidity, and ship it back to FN H, to be re-used on subsequent shipments.

I wonder what their 922(r) parts are, furniture and magazine alone wouldn't do it. I'd think the lower would have to be US-made to comply with the LCMM import rule, which would make sense given that the furniture is similar. Metal bits Belgian, plastic bits American.

So apparently the FN sales rep I spoke to was playing a bit fast and loose with the truth, yes technically to be legal under 18 USC 922(r) it has to be domestically manufactured - oh, but all of the metal parts come from Belgium...

The ACR has a few things going for it already:

- Fixed stock
- uses fairly modified AR barrels (able to get/make .223 chamberings)

You would need to get something like a muzzle brake or a plain non-threaded barrel....

They are gonna be very pricey though....

Negative. They switched over to a different system that has to be turned from a blank. It will not accept modified ar15 barrels.

I should have figured, They killed a lot of the other "modular" components on it already. In any case, it should be "doable" by a company, but I wonder if we'll be able to get the components? (gas block, barrel extension, op-rod guide), or have to part them out off of an existing barrel....

The more time passes the less I'm interested in it tho... The XCR already seems to have MOST of these features, and they are already making a non-restricted Canadian version of it. All we need is some more parts support for it (folding stock adaptor, and maybe a light barrel) and we're good!

Yea the prototype had a non cycling handle too. I think given the same choices I would have gone with the option they have as well. Its just simple, some thing may not need to be fixed.

The M16 FOW is a pretty nice piece of kit but for all the justifications it still has some flaws. There is certainly room for improvement and all options should be welcomed.
