So im looking at getting my first firearm.

My understanding is that they are stamped .308.... but arent they 7.62 nato?

If i was to buy the rifle and just get a box of commercial .308win would my face blow off? lol

I have read all this forum, and some people say dont use commerical, some people say do. All this headspace talk has my head spinning.

I shoot commercial .308 ammo in my M14S all the time. I just be sure to keep it below the 180 bullet weight. I prefer 165 and 155 ammo. I truly love Hornady 165 in my rifle. Super accurate.

Just some scary sh*t some of this reading. Specially being it would be my first rifle (ill get a 22LR as well for more economical shooting)....i just have always loved the M14.

Good to know i wont blow myself up
 
I shoot almost exclusively 7.62 out of mine but the few times when I have used .308 it was A-Ok. For hunting ammo your gonna need .308 anyway.
 
Just get it gauged after you buy it to see and you will know forsure. I have 2 and have shot both 7.62 and .308 out of both without a problem
 
most of them run on both 7.62 nato and .308.
despite all the headspace mystery and hype.
in all my nato headspaced rifles that i shoot .308 commercial in, I keep the brass anyways, and at the end of each range trip i inspect the commercial brass for fatigue near the base, or splitting at the base or near the datum/shoulder
evidence of fatigue or cracking will tell you if .308 is bad for your gun.
also, once you get said gun, there are a couple helpful cgn guys, like hungry and a couple others that you can mail 5 fired cases to and they can MIC your brass and give you a pretty good idea of your rifle's headspace.... no gunsmith required ;)
 
Send me 3 cases and I can / will mic them for ya. That way you have a ball park idea of how large your chamber is. Remember that the M14 is a battle rifle and hence desined for bolt swap-ability in the field under combat (cold wet dusty muddy corroded hungry tired pissed off and far from home) conditions.

Well it's not going to happen.

GF threw a hissy at me today. Canceling my pre-order from Marstar i just made today...when i get to work tomorrow i guess..

On a same topic, I recently got a M14S and then went and bought a box of 308 with the 180gr heads, without checking to see if this ok to use. So can it be used?

180gr is the max...and not good long term. most people from what i've read shoot 155gr

it would be a GOOD idea to look at "m14 match loads" and DECIDE FOR YOURSELF what bullet weight is right for you- while "most" people ( and i use the term loosely) use the 150/155- THE ACCURACY REALLY COMES UP with 165-168's-and when you move up into that weight class, you're also viable for elk and moose- or at least that's what i've found- as for the other situation, it's BEST to keep your joy to yourself about guns- most women don't care for them, and a few even HATE them- i've tried the golf club approach and a few others- best to just buy it, and place it in the rack with the others, and say NOTHING- as long as it's not one of those "camo" ones that stands out, chances are, she'll never notice- unless she balances your checkbook too
 
It would be my first gun. Always liked the M14. She wasn't overly pleased when I got my PAL and I guess that was the foreshadowing to this.

we own a house together, etc; basicly married. I'm trying to guilt her - took off last night for a couple hrs...slept in guest room, etc. Doesn't seem to be working. So I cancelled preorder. Can always call back if she changes her mind.

tell her its a saftey issue, you want to be able to protect her if anything ever happened.
doesn't she love you enough to let you protect her?
teach her to shoot to protect you should anything ever happen and your injuried, this might just get her into the sport.

Not that you asked for any advice, but that sort of thing led to my crash-and-burn-train-wreck that was my first marriage :redface: It will never work and you WILL both become resentful. Shower her with love and attention :adult: - then drop the M14 bomb on her. Funny, both my wives didn't like guns, but grew to not think anything of them after a while. Even when going through a particularly nasty divorce, my wife was never concerned about firearms.
