Just to clarify the point above, is it that a rimmed round is not fashionable, or is there a problem with rims that prevents it from being super accurate?
I was under the impression that a rim actually helps with headspacing etc, and could potentially be an accuracy aid. In the right cartridge and rifle of course.
The trend seems to be short and fat, so that rules out many of the older designs.
As the Russians, French, Brits, Chinese and whomever else have proven, in military firearms, a rimmed cartridge can work very well.
One big disadvantage is stacking. The rimless cartridge packs better in boxes and 'straight' mags. No good in an assault rifle but just fine in a belt fed type gun.
No one can say an RPK is not a reliable SAW. Just a different approach to solving the same problem.
Beyond that, there is no issue about accuracy using either rim style. Whether belt or rim, the best way to headspace for accuracy is off the shoulder and all present cartridges are bottleneck.
Although the trend in target shooters is towards short fat, the advantages of long and skinny will never fade in a high capacity firearm.
Had a very interesting conversation with a very good US shooter. It was refreshing to hear a shooter with a wall of medals suggest short fat is NOT where it is at in some forms of shooting.
