7.62x54R in modern sniper rifles

Just to clarify the point above, is it that a rimmed round is not fashionable, or is there a problem with rims that prevents it from being super accurate?
I was under the impression that a rim actually helps with headspacing etc, and could potentially be an accuracy aid. In the right cartridge and rifle of course.
The trend seems to be short and fat, so that rules out many of the older designs.

As the Russians, French, Brits, Chinese and whomever else have proven, in military firearms, a rimmed cartridge can work very well.

One big disadvantage is stacking. The rimless cartridge packs better in boxes and 'straight' mags. No good in an assault rifle but just fine in a belt fed type gun.

No one can say an RPK is not a reliable SAW. Just a different approach to solving the same problem.

Beyond that, there is no issue about accuracy using either rim style. Whether belt or rim, the best way to headspace for accuracy is off the shoulder and all present cartridges are bottleneck.

Although the trend in target shooters is towards short fat, the advantages of long and skinny will never fade in a high capacity firearm.

Had a very interesting conversation with a very good US shooter. It was refreshing to hear a shooter with a wall of medals suggest short fat is NOT where it is at in some forms of shooting.

pricey, but competitive with other rifles in this caliber, retail will be $5000 +/- depends on how much will be all the charges to get it from the factory to my hands...

Thanks for the post, Jerry.
I was referring specifically to accuracy in my post.
Yes, a rimmed round is not good for feeding from a mag, I have experienced rim-overs in Lee-Enfields.
You mention no problem in belt feds. Yes, it can be made to work, like the 303 Vickers. However, it still blows my mind as to how something so complex was engineered back in the 1880's. The round has to be pulled rearward, then down to line up with the chamber, then forward into the chamber.
Astonishing.

How big was the Cell Phone, and computer in the 70's and 80's?

Gotta start somewhere.

Way back when the Finnish version of the Mosin Nagant was used successfully at top levels of rifle shooting. I think it may have even won an Olympic medal?????

Many countries still field the 7.62X54R in sniper rigs. With the right ammo, no problem getting into the MOA range which is more then accurate enough for its intended useage.

Has technology moved on - YEP. But sometimes old habits die hard.

In the 70's, I had the opportunity to shoot one of the best sport shooting rifles; the MTs-13, as pictured:

I doubt that the quality of the current rifles coming out of modern day Russia even compare to the high quality rifles produced during the Soviet Union.

If today I wanted a rifle in this caliber, I would get the polish made m44 from the 11 factory. Easy to find in Canada, built approximately in the 50's. Put a new .308 barrel, chamber for 7.62x54r. That would probably be the best way to have a highly accurate rifle in this caliber. Only using home reloaded ammunition of course.
