Why is CGN private? What do we gain from this?

I hope this is the correct sub forum.

I am curious as to why CGN is a private forum? What do we have to hide? What do we gain from being private?

There are so many political threads with intelligent and critical discussions of the so-called 'anti's' tactics, agendas, and outright propaganda- but I firmly believe they are wasted discussions. Only registered members can read and discuss and we all mostly agree. So what's the point? How are we informing those who would disagree? Who are curious? On the fence?

The internet is the strongest of modern mediums. Yet we have blocked ourselves from this excellent source. Few curious people will take the time to register in order to find out, 'The other side of the story.'

The people that need to see the forums the most are never going to put the effort in to join. However, if the forums were made public the truth of Canada's firearm culture would be available for all to see.

CGN is privately owned. Registering only costs 30 seconds of your time .
Have you seen what happens to unmoderated web forums? not pretty....;)
 
Just the sheer amount of spam and fly-by insult posts would have the mods reeling.
 
I think lonely_wolf is referring to the fact that you can't even look at the forums until you are a registered member. I think it's a weird thing too.

On most forums, you are allowed to look but can't post until you are a member.

I'm willing to bet that there are quite a few members who have never posted a thing on this site. They just signed up to be able to look at the information.
 
Because it filters out the bad people. I'll give a few situations:

1. Anti goes and googles guns, CGN comes up, he reads a thread he doesn't like, joins and flames.

2. Anti goes ang googles guns, CGN comes up, he finds out he has to register and he moves on to the next site.

3. Hardcore anti sees that someone mentions that they have a cousin in a dream in africa that has an unregistered gun, the join and flame, get permabanned and tell all there anti friends=flamefest.


Which of these scenarios would you want?
 
I looked around on CGN a lot before I registered as a member?.... It never locked me out, I just had to search from google and I had access.

I was looking into the licensing process when I first was getting into firearms and it brought me to thread in CGN. From there I had access to the other forums but not things like the EE...

Maybe things have changed since then?

by being private , very little , if anything said in the forum will be on google , so ......

anti googles "guns " cgn DOESN'T come up , anti isn't given a oprotunity to even sign up and flame away ....
 
People who belong here are here. (E.G.: People who care enough to register.)

You are aware of the media's use of the term lone wolf, right?

You can see how that kind of thing found on an random internet search might be "misinterpreted", right?

If we're so exclusive and secret and all, how did you end up here?
 
Those who are truly interested will register.
Registration gives us at least some slight control over who is here, and how they behave when they are here. Even though some go to great lengths to hide their identity, they generally out themselves.
 
It's private so that the management can control what is posted here.

Just imagine the horrors of free speech.

OMG really? Come on, this is a good topic to discuss. I like to send my "non-gun" friends pic and forms topics for them to see (lots of people here in canada don't even know you can legally own a handgun) and then they can't see it with out the hole has to register thing. I love lurking around M4carbine.com, you don't have to register. Can you imagine what the guys over there would do with all those ignorant Anti.

Great group of people here. Troll. Sheepdog. Very mature. I guess that is why we have to keep the forums private. People so easily brought to belligerence should not be in a position to educate.

Maybe some of you are the true misanthropes. I remember when CrossFit first put its site up. Very controversial in the beginning (and still is in some ways). Thanks to the forums and ability for anyone to browse and learn, it took the fitness community by storm. Having a secret little club is fine, but having a culture is sublime.

Let the anti's, haters, spammers, trolls, and trouble makers come. Do you not think we could handle them? Do you not think intelligent discussion has the potential to help us better inform people about firearms?

Anyone should be allowed to read the forums freely and learn.The Gazette doesn't have issues allowing people to read its opinions freely- and its opinions to do us no favours.
 
I like it private. Feels like a BBQ night in my fully fenced backyard! Neighbors can smell the tasty meat but cannot have it! And if they try to enter without my permission - I will feed them to dogs! :D
