New m1 garand!!!! Woooo!!! Wooooo!!!woo!!!

I'm about to buy my first Garand. Springfield Armory built around '53. There's some pitting on the receiver, rust on trigger guard and normal marks on stock and front parts.
I guess it's not a collection piece but how is a standard Garand nowadays?
How is 750$ +shipping?

mine was a little rusty on the inside, and has a minimal amount on the exterior. If your paying 750 it should be in fairly good condition, possibly better than the one you might buy sounds like. i say hold out and find a better garand for the same price!

Wildphil24 - I'd be leery of someone selling a rusty rifle.
Marines used to have to bury their M1's in the wet sand overnight as punishment, and then get up at the crack of dawn, to scrub the rust off it in time for inspection. I'm sure the seller has had more than 12 hours to properly maintain his rifle!!

Nice find, your rifle looks to have plenty of character! Should clean up well with some stripper and BLO. A lot of the dents will steam out too.

You mentioned that you've used some commercial 30.06 but plan to reload soon. I understand up north that mil-surp ammo can be hard to come by but I highly recomend that you avoid modern ammo!!! Powder is way too slow and severe damage may result with use. Maybe not with 1 round, maybe not at 100 rounds but it WILL result. Op-rod, bolt and receiver. Buy the latest Hornady Reloding manual. It has M1 specific reloading data that will insure a long life for your rifle and saftey for you! Stick with bullets from 150 to 180 gr and powders such as IMR4896-4064. Vargit is also a good choice. Too much pressure at the gas port WILL cause trouble and you will avoid it with carefull reloading. A big tip, uniform your primer pockets and seat your primers below flush! Watch your COL too and you will have many safe round with your M1 in the future!

Hope you enjoy your M1 as much as I do!

Good info Rifleguy! I can help you with some feng shui if you want. To be in perfect harmony you need to move the rifle on you far left to my gun cabinet to correct polarity and align you Qi toward the positive. :D

98%Brent,

You picked a good rifle! That's my 5.4M SA that I bought thru the CMP program. I've rebuilt it some with trigger work, shims, NM 1/2 MOA sights and adjustable gas cylinder lock screw. My best shooter! If I do my part it will shoot 1 MOA with my reloads, real good for an M1. I use it in NRA High Power matches and at Camp Perry for event at the Nationals. A real blast to shoot at 600 yards!!! I'd send it to you but I must have 3 M1's in order to stack them properly, LOL!

Glad the info helped!

Talking rifles.

cheers

"So, like, I was built, greased up and put in a box with a dozen of my friends. Then I was shipped to a place, given to a youngster who fired me over and over. I got cold and wet at times, but in the end I was placed back in the box where I sat and sat. Next thing you know, they're taking bits off me and putting other ones on. Back in the box. Some time later I'm removed, mailed to a guy named driller212 who, so far, is treating me right."

Welcome to the club!

When your cleaning your Garand, be careful when wiping the follower. When I first got my Garand as was a bit unfamiliar with it, I wiped the follower and the bolt came forward and slammed my finger.

You only do that once, believe me.
