Well I had an early delivery from my post lady today. Last Thursday I ordered my new gun from Clay at Prophet River Firearms and I didn't expect it to be here until Friday, but luck is on my side I guess. So folks here is my new Ruger Hawkeye 35 Whelen:D I have topped it off with a VXIII 2.5-8x36mm scope. I have some 250gr Hornadys, 225gr TSX's, 250gr Speer that I am going to load up for the range. This gun should compliment my Rem 7600 35 Whelen "carbine" that it sits beside it in the safe. So I will now have something to go and play with this weekend at the range. This combo should reek havoc on our Ontario big game this year.

And here's a pic of the 7600 35 Whelen "Carbine" that now shares the safe with the Ruger.

I really like my 7600 Paul, it's one of my favorites. Thanks again for the opportunity of owning one.:D

GREAT addition - love it.

Would you pleeease check the twist rate in that Ruger with a tight patch or brush?

All available written published info says 16" twist but another CGNer says his new Ruger/35Whelen is actually a 12" twist - http://www.canadiangunnutz.com/forum/showthread.php?t=475159

Got it on the other thread - 12" twist - wow! Ruger you keep us all guessing.

Yup I checked it out, I also got a 1:12 twist rate. I am very happy with this gun, I'll have to see how it shoots now. Hopefully this weekend I'll get out.

Your rifle should kill big stuff real dead. After seeing it I just might need to add a stainless synthetic like yours to complement my classic walnut/blued rifles, everyone should have one rifle for tough conditions ( or another excuse to buy one more rifle) Nice that Ruger saw fit to make the new ones in 1-12" twist too.

Well, that might be not as much blessing. I have Win mod 88 in 358 Win in 1-16" twist and when shooting my "emergency loads" 275g Horrnady RN at almost 2100FPS and suprise, suprise even at 200yds those bullets don't keyhole. To have 12" twist in 35 Whelen is uncalled for, whatsoever, it will invite spikes in pressure and obvious loss in velocity compared to 16" twist. How much loss? as much as up to 100fps I am sure. Only when shooting 310gr Woodleighs I would consider using 14" twist. My 2c.

gunrunner8 thanks for warning us all off the 12" twist 35s in such categorical terms. Please be sure and send the same memo to James Howe, Schultz&Larsen, and Geoff MacDonald (Woodleigh Bullets). They also really need to hear about just how "uncalled for, whatsoever" 12" twist 35s are. Until now I never knew how bad they were and I own three like that. Rebarreling them is my only option now. I guess my shooting chrony has to go also as it has never registered any odd wonky low velocities or spiky highs with 12 twists particularly. :p

BTW a Win mod 88 in 358 Win is very cool - the coolest if it's a factory made original.

My 2c too.

Ya Gotta Take Them Open Sights Off:p

Ya, I think I'll leave the sights on, I do like the idea of back-ups in the event of anything happening to my scope. I do have QWR on it to remove the scope easier.

nice, how do they shoot? Did anyone catch the article in one of the gun mags of the new 30 whelen, necked the sucker down, super hot new cartridge??????

I haven't shot the gun yet it just came out of the wrapper when I had taken these pictures. Hopefully this weekend I'll get it out. I think there on to something there with that new 30 Whelen, if it's anything like the 35 it will be one hell of a caliber-everyone will want one.:p

Well there you have it. You can make those guns uglier. It used to look like a fat chick, and now it looks like a fat chick with no eyebrows and a mustache. (shiver)

For the OP, that sure is a nice new rifle. Great glass selection.

Thanks Rem338, I hope it shoots as well as I think it should. I have been slowly converting my glass selection over to Leupold slowly, but I must say my Bushnell 4200 that's on my 7MM is pretty nice. My buddy wants this scope so I may sell it and replace it with a 3.5-10 or 4.5-14 Leupold VX3, not sure yet what I am going to do.

I think you need one to add to your collection :). I really appreciate wood blued guns, but I just feel bad taking a nice one into the woods and possibly tripping and scratching something pretty. So its stainless synthetic for me. I hope this thing has enough horsepower to kill some of our armored big game here in Ontario, I imagine a healthy dose of RL15 and 225gr TSX's will be a good start.

Nothing wrong with the 4200 series. Very bright glass. The only down side is weight really, as the adjustments are accurate, and smooth.
Leupold is "my" brand at the moment as I had a bad experience with Bushnell's service. Leupy has it all when you account for service, bang for buck, and weight. Kinda like the Whelen actually.

Being addicted to 7600s Supercub was in like a dirty shirt.
Good for a grin.

Rem338win's comment was easily the laugh of the day....Made me laugh so hard I nearly cried!

I too like the glass choice.

I'm sure the OP will bring home lots of meat with his rifles.

Got to love this site. :D

If you flip the current scope you should try the 4200 1.5-6x40. Very very bright scope, with a very forgiving range of magnification for hunting.
A nice McMillan on that Whelen would really finish it ;)

You are correct, the one thing I don't like about the Bushnell is the size and weight of there scopes. I am maybe leaning towards a VX3 4.5-14x40mm B&C for the 7MM as it is my "longer" range gun but I'm not sure yet. The Ruger will someday get a McMillan stock, I think the stock would be a awesome upgrade. My Rem 700 7MM mag came with a McMillan stock I bought from a fellow CGNer (thanks again Blargon:D) and I really like it, so I may order one for this beast.
