As for HP it being safer, well, majority of handguns are shot at ranges which should be safe for regular ammo. If you're creating dangerous ricochets, then either you or the range is not being safe.

Telling people to use a big knife is just stupid. If you off someone with any weapon that you are in legal possession of in your home the charges that you potentially face are THE SAME, regardless of what was used....

Attitudes where people (such as above) question the need for guns in certain situations allow bans, restrictions and plain silly laws to pass-by. "Meh, if it doesn't affect me then I don't care"--- complacent enthusiasm is very nearly as dangerous to our rights as full blown antis.

Likely the coolness factor since the paper doesn't care a hoot if it's JHP or regualr RN.

Although the JHP .500 S&W Magnum rounds I loaded and shot at the last Haloween pumkin shoot sure did a number on that pumkin when we filled it with water first. It turned into an orange mist! ! ! ! :D

I ran out of regular FMJ, and started shooting a part box of Win SXT. They really grouped well, i was surprised. Price is about double.
 
I like to have a couple of 158Gr XTP HP 357mag Full house load under hand.
When I get ask by others at the range to try my revolvers I always make sure to give them these little goodies. So far everyone was like WTF !
Hey you want to shoot big boys Gun assume position :D

So what...just because my guns are legally stored I'm not at least going to try to get to one if I have a chance????? Secondly, I said I would deal with the legal issues AFTER I take care of "business" with the intruder...I choose jail over not doing whatever I could to protect my family!
 
I'm not even going to entertain a proper answer...instead I give this...

I horde ammo, and not the supposedly friendlier military only FMJ...which is sort of ironic alone once you think of it, but lots of JHP of a variety of flavors.

JHP's? Why? Because I want to, I can, and I will excercise my freedom when using them to repel zombies, aliens, criminals, killer squirrels, fat women and any other phychologically/shizophrenically paranoid conjured threat at every opportunity presented to me.
If lacking of the aforementioned (Which is 99.999999% of the time), I will excercise my freedom to offend, disgust, horrify and most definately notify liberals, defeatists, the left-wing peanut gallery, odd CGN posters and any and all who oppose me of the right to own this stash of juicy, beautiful, flesh maiming, baby killing, bullet expanding JHP glory.

Fingerprint safe bolted inside nightstand, magazine on the bed stand while I'm home. Otherwise in a different locker. I'm home, so I can put my damn ammo where I want.

I come in around 6 or 7 seconds.
