Ammo carriers,what do you use?

I run a canvas ammo bag with a sling. I just do a quick and dirty stacking of the shells in the bottom of the bag so they're orientated forward and they seem to stay put for the most part unless you're really running around like crazy.

The bag i'm currently using could probably fit at least 100 shells but I usually have no more than 30 in there. I'll probably go with something a little smaller and "dialled in" in the future.

This one looks really sweet, anybody using one? seems kind of pricey

if youre going to be wearing shotgun shells all over your belt, you may as well get something more efficient, like the shell strippers:

a lot faster to load, but carries less.

not sure what youd need to carry ~100 shells for like in the video, except perhaps the zombie apocalypse? even then it would be pretty heavy, zombies run pretty fast these days.

We had Tactical Response's Fighting Shotgun class here in Peace River last month. The video is of one particular drill. You start with one round loaded and shoot in turn down the line. When you shoot you load two, and shoot, then three, etc, up to load five, shoot five. It puts a lot of stress on the shooter to get loaded and ready for their next turn.

Those OSOE micro rigs work very well. The 3 guys in class who ran them loved them. They carry 24 rounds.

I agree, nicer setup with the California strippers. (The shell holders, Not the girls)

After watching some of them have to glance down and also fighting the elastic loops I wonder why they use that rig. It looks excellent for keeping ammo secure on the move. But if they are only going to stand there and shoot for the entire drill I'll put my money on a regular skeet, trap, or sporting clays shooter wearing a plain old vest with 25 shells dumped in the pocket. Good shooters (read that as practiced regular shooters) can manipulate the orientation of a shotshell to load it without even thinking just by feel. Try it, it gets to be automatic. If they gotta run then a vest is out. My 2 cents.

So far I only use my shotgun for sport clays but I'd like to eventually see the more tactical side of things. Does anyone have an opinion on dump pouches used to hold shells? I've only really seen it used in a tactical manner in The Way of The Gun. Otherwise I just notice people using it for holding spent hulls.

I used a large dump pouch for my shells during Fighting Shotgun. With the neck of it cinched smaller I never lost any, even when running. When possible, I loaded out of my side saddle and then filled the saddle from the pouch.

However, it does provide ample opportunity for classmates to fill it full of empties while you're shooting.

Ach,so, a little team spirt, just to handicapped you a bit.:p

Another thing with the dump pouch, well for me any ways,is you have to be a little more careful about which way the shells are before trying to load them, especially with gloves on,you can load them backwards, always good for a laugh.

I just dump them in, they get all mixed up anyways. I wear gloves running my shotgun and I found I could make it work regardless of which way the round ended up in my hand.

Micro Rig

A couple comments about the micro rig featured.

First off the stuff John makes is quality. His s**t is tough. It will outlast you probably.

Secondly, using the micro rig allows for the seperation of buck or shot loads from slug loads. It also allows you to align them for easy access and if you are going to grab shells out of a dump bag, you will accidently some day put the shell in backwards through the ejection port. Using your trap vest sounds like a great idea until your the guy standing beside me eyeing up my microrig during class.

Thirdly if you are looking for a 3 gun rig, this would be the cats ass. You can use it to fit two AR mags as well as two things of shotshells for a total of 12.

I believe you. A guy that shoots often has the developed skills that let him instinctively load shells perfect no matter how he grabs them from a pouch. Thats been my experience too when playing speed shooting games wearing a shooting vest with big pockets.

I find most shorts or jeans, and even some jean shorts, come with wonderful shell carriers, on both sides of Thor's Hammer, about 4-5 inches outwards (depending on the girth of the pants wearer) and slightly up. I heard one of the kids on the bus today refer to them as "pockets", they work pretty good. They don't cost any $$$, so they by definition, are not tactical, nor hi speed/lo drag. The tree I killed with buckshot, couldn't tell the difference however.

Who said anything about wearing "Pants"?
