Hi everyone this is my first review so bare with me.

Review of BAIKAL MP-161K.

Type: 22L Semi-auto Rimfire rifle
Range: Calgary District Target and shooters
Weather conditions: Rain/Snow Mix 10 KM wind
Yardage to target: 50 yards.
Mods: none, shot as it came.
Comes with Gun, and 2x9 round 22L mags
Bought from : Shooters Choice in Arrowwood Alberta

To break down the gun.
Positives
-Nice weight, about 5.5lb
-Very comfortable grips and stock.
-Colour of the gun looks great. (most pictures show a light grey and blue mix)
-Very easy to load, mags both have an assist on the side of them for easy loading, if needed.
-Mag release although on the bottom of the gun by the mag is very easy to use and release is smooth.
-Sights, front is a fixed sight, and read is an adjustable sight. Also you can mount a scope or a red dot with the weaver rail on the gun.
-nice adjustable cheek rest. (see neg aswell)
-NON- restricted (which i love)
-Price

Negs
-Adjustable cheek rest, must be tightened to comfortable spot, so bring a screw driver with you.
-Only 9 rounds but i have spoken to baikal and they may look at a longer mag in the future
- If empty mag in, slide holds open, if no mag slide closes, but you can not safely release the hammer, you will end up having to dry fire it, or put your safety on it.

So I bought the Gun from "Shooters Choice in Arrowwood Alberta", at the time i was looking at the S&W MP-15-22 and the Colt M$ carbine aswell, The colt i love but it was high priced for a .22L and the S&W MP 15-22 is a nice gun but the length and feel for myself didn't feel right. So i took a look at the Baikal MP-161K, it was abit cheaper (low 500) then the S&W, but felt better. I went with it because it was non-restricted. I had not heard much about it, but those sneaky Russians made the AK-47 so i figured that this would be pretty good as well.
First time I shot it was on the 29th of May (today) and it shot very well, setting up targets in the snow and rain was dumb but fun, none the less.
Set up at 50 yards, and shot 5 rounds, all center mass very nice grouping too. Shot another 45 rounds (no picture due to the target ripping apart from being wet) and impressed with overall shots from the gun.
After 50 rounds the weather was getting worse so i shut down but I look forward to shooting more from this gun and upgrading with either a scope or a red dot.

Ammo used during this review

Hopefully its a decent review, since its my first.
Overall I would suggest if your looking for a semi auto Rifle thats non-restricted i would go with it forsure, i am impressed and am very happy with it.

That is a heck of a nice group at 50 yards with open sights, especially with your ammunition of choice. This ammo isn't what you would describe as well regarded in many rimfire circles.
Very good review you have given, we shoot Federal American Eagle 38gr round in ours, it seems to function very well. FS

Oh yes sorry i didn't say that part.
No jams, The brass i checked, came out clean, no damage to it.
I found the trigger pull was a good ratio, and was very comfortable with it.
I did a combo of small bursts and slow shooting really no difference with the gun expelled the brass.

I accidentally found out about this gun yesterday... and I have to say, it looks mighty interesting. :D

It's not the mag capacity he talking about, the S&W MP-15-22 is a restricted rimfire as it's based on the AR-15 and considered a "variant".

Edit: and ya snow out here at this time of year is nothing out of the ordinary.

I have one of these critters.

So far I tried it once only. Fired about 50 rounds. Accurate enough with open sights at 25 yards.

Works and cycles flawlessly with CCI ammunition.
Fails almost 40% of the time with the "el-cheaperino" WINCHESTER WILCAT ammunition that I have lying around for years.

I am guessing this rifle needs ammo that has a bit of oomph in order to cycle properly. Or maybe it just needs to be broken in ???

I will try it with different brands of ammo and find the most appropriate one as far as price/effectiveness.

I also plan to mount a red dot sight on it.
Here is mine:

I'm still plenty confused as to what he meant....

I know what you mean, a non-restricted rimfire can hold as much ammo as you want so the 9 rounds has nothing to do with it being non-restricted. Maybe the OP ment that he is ok with 9 rounds because it is non-restricted, not that it is non-restricted because of the 9 rounds.

It's tacticool out of the box. It is also different from the other run of the mill 10/22 etc. offerings. So yes, he probably meant that nine rounds are not a deal breaker since it is unrestricted.

I on the other hand would think that this is a big deal breaker, since the big selling point of semi-auto rimfires in Canada are the 10+ magazines. Unto each his own I guess. If Ruger only made a compact stainless model, now that would be t:ts.

In any case, nice review.

Sounds solid...

nice rifle! just bought a smith and wesson m&p 15-22 today and it makes me angry that this can fly for non-restricted and the smith not... did anyone else know that a HK SL-8 is non-restricted? that thing is .223 and you can hunt with it! its amazing how those that classify rifles do it. just dont get how you can classify certain weapons as restricted vs non-restricted when the weapons mentioned are all AR types of rifles.. at least they look like it.

that's where I found myself while looking at this rifle. however, it def looks like a shooter, even with that ammo.
To the OP, nice shooting! any chance you could post some pictures of the rifle when its broken down for a cleaning? I's like to see how it comes apart and such.
