cz 858 bore rust

No rust here, and I not only live in the damp West Coast climate but within spitting distance of salt water to boot.

What are you all using for oil? I use G96 and lots of it if I know my guns are going to be sitting for awhile, the better brands of oil are like night and day when it comes to supplying rust protection.

You can listen to all kinds of tales about water, hot water, windex ect. when that doesn't work, use Ed's Red. It costs 20 bucks a gallon and you won't have any rust. You mix it yourself in the garage with available materials from crappy tire. It contains 4 equal parts of: kerosene, varsol, acetone, and dextrol transmission fluid. Any idiot can make it for less than a tenth of the cost of commercial cleaners.

that just sounds like a lot of work
id rather buy a product that works

I live on the west coast, have an 858 and shoot corrosive ammo. I have not had a rust problem yet.

After shooting I clean my rifle with windex and water, then leave the hairdryer on laying on the floor pointed at the rifle for 5 to 10 mintes.

This heats up the gun and ensures all the water has evaporated. Then I clean using a bore brush and Hoppes solvent. After cleaning I give everything a fine layer of G96 and a thin layer of Hoppes no. 9 through the bore.

Easy to correct.
Step 1
J-B Bore Cleaning Compound

Step 2
J-B Bore Bright

Problem solved

any of you guys use copper solvent? Lol this is my way of cleaning Step by step 1. run hot water down the bore once the metal is hot just like when i shot it i spray windex ( lots of carbon goes away) then dry quickly. 2. i Hopper 9 solvent, i run it several times to get simple clean bore with a lil black on the patch 3. i use Wipe-Out (best cleaner) let it sit over a night. after a night when i run a patch i always get dark blue(Blue =Copper fowling) with a lil gray (Black or gray=( Carbon)then i run couple patched to dry the solvent if the Blue and gray or black color continues i repeat step 3 sometimes up to 2 or 3 days until My patches come out clean(Ive cleaned the barrel with WIPE-OUT until its clean and used other solvents and they all come out clean=Means WIPE-OUT is good) and 4. i Run a patch with alilbit of gun oil :) and i have never had rust in my barrel except my K98 Mauser at first when i got it but not anymore

Here's how i do, at least work perfect for me.
1-field strip
2-boiling water down the bore and the gas port to flush salt also wipe bolt, piston with a wet rag wearing rubber gloves to not burn myself:) after i clean the part with a bit of solvent.
3-1 dry patch to wipe the bore
4- 2 patchs with cr10 cleaner(not every time)
5-4 or 5 dry patchs to get the solvent out.
6 1 very very lightly oiled patch to finish(very little oil so i dont dry patch before firing again, useful if an unexpected zombie knock at the door:D)
That the method i use for complete cleaning, take more time to write than do it.
Maybe not the best but work perfect for me and my cz never have any rust.

Anyone in Calgary? TSE has an awesome cleaning station which is non-toxic that coats your gun in a rust inhibitor. It's really sweet.

two or three days lol
#### it i will let it rust

The point being that if you rely on water and windex to clean your rifle it's going to rust. Hot water will help to flush salts from the rifle but just because the salts are gone doesn't mean that it wont rust...

As for the total Windex farce... Windex is mostly water and when you use it you are actually getting the flushing effects of the water that is removing the salts. Standard Ammonia alone will not dissolve these salts, however Ammonia‐d3 will if you want to spend the extra money ont hat product. But the contact time that this product has with the salts is likely not as effective as the flushing effect of the water. Hot water helps speed the process of putting the salts into solution and flushing them out. So if you want to use $8 bottles of water to clean your rifle, have at 'er... but you've been had. When I got out of the Infantry the Queen was nice enough to send me to school to take Env Eng and I spent a lot of time doing Organic Chemistry. I can draw you a picture if you want to show you why household ammonia will never dissolve any salt, but the carrier solution it is in... water... will.

If it's an utter and total clean you're looking for (no battle rifle should ever be cleaned spotless) Flush with regular, free HOT tap water, and then clean as per.

However if you want to clean it like it's a rifle... brush/jag the barrel, wipe and oil the surface of the rifle. Done. An oiled rag/patch is more than capable in wiping off salts. I have more rounds down the barrel of my test VZ than 90% of the VZs here COMBINED and I have never put water, windex, WD, etc on my rifle; and it has never rusted. (aside from the gunzilla v s clp vs bare metal test we did) What I do use is the supplied cleaning kit, patches and oil.

The point is.. if your rifle is left dry it will rust.. every time. If you keep it OILED.. it will never rust. If you want to reduce the time it takes to clean this way get a product like Gunzilla (plug) that can preserve and dissolve salts in one.

Windex

Windex IS water with soap and Ammonia D.

Soap and water is the MOST effective means of cleaning out corrosive salts.

Ammonia D is not ammonia. It is a different chemical entirely. It is a DESSICANT which prevents flash rust from the water.

I have been using Windex ONLY to clean corrosive for years and never used boiling water. NEVER had rust.

And yes - any clean bore not protected with oil WILL rust.

Boiling water is UNNECESSARY with Windex.

If you try it u will like it -;)

Also

Gunzilla as well as KG-12 are the best cleaners on the market.

A few ounces of Windex on the gun is much cheaper than a few ounces of Gunzilla.

FWIW, the rason so many gys favor windex (I use the cheapo walmart facsimile) is because in addition to flushing salts (the water component), the ammonia gives you a head start on dissolving the copper deposits in the bore. I do this at the range before I leave.

When I get home, I use an Enfield funnel to direct a little more water down the bore (just tap water hot) and then I clean as per usual.

For oil, I always use BALLISTOL. why? Because it's water-soluble, so even if I missed getting a little of the water out of the gun, it goes into solution with the ballistol and will not cause rust.

There is no ammonia in Windex. Its ammonia d - a dessicant not chemically related to ammonia.

Perhaps a Windex clone may have real ammonia in it , I dont know, but if it does it would be sufficiently diluted to have no effect on copper.

Most milspec corrosive bullets are not gilded in copper anyway -:)

Not sure what surplus you use, but most of my stuff is copper. Also, my walmart windex bottle says ammonia right on it, not ammonia d.

Also, after sitting in the bore for an hour, my patches come out blue-green, so it's definitely dissolving copper.
