IPSC....IDPA...what to try?

So I guess the question now is was it worth the money?

I think the BB course was well worth the money.
They teach a little of everything but mostly its firearms safety, and control.

The $170 includes a one year membership to IPSC too, so $100 for two full days of
firearms trianing. I learned alot more at the BB course than any of the other I have taken.

I just got back into guns last year. Did RPAL, ATT, Hunter Ed, and Turkey course.

Yes I assume so but checking the list of events I do not see anything but the one bb course next weekend. I am not sure why one would not be allowed to use a holster as long as the gun is unloaded....

At EOHC the use of a holster is encouraged and recomended
for UN-LOADED guns.
To holster and draw a LOADED gun from holster,
you must be an active member of one of the common
action shooting disiplines.

Respect the time of the people that put on courses don't waste a IPSC instructors time if you plan to do IDPA unless you ask them first.

Its not harsh to ask people to respect the time of others. I didn't even insinuate I specifically said if they plan to do IDPA.

to be honest, if the person takes the course and does not shoot that many IPSC matches, at least they have taken the course and will be a better/safer shooter for it. I would like them to keep shooting, but I doubt any instructor would tell them they are wasting their time.

Plus the targets, patches, and other expenses get covered for the course....the booklets or exams cost money, as do the certificates. (not a whole lot of money, but money nonetheless). I think it is money well spent. It serves also to educate shooters about the sport of IPSC, why certain rules exist, the divisions, and how to maintain safe muzzle control whilst moving with a small firearm on the range. This is a step above most basic LE qualifications, which usually have one target at a certain distance; movement is usually not included or minimal in the course of fire.
Glad you took the course;)

I hope the students we have this weekend continue with the sport, or at least come away with a better knowledge about action shooting sports.

How advanced is the BB course? I have never drawn from a holster and I am not a great shot (one big hole in the target is rare for me even from 7 meters) and I guess my question is, what should you be able to do BEFORE taking the black badge course. Shooting one handed with weak and strong? What kind of group from what distance? Things like that. I don't want to take the course only to be the guy holding the class back. I don't mind eye rolls if I am not that good, but would prefer not to be the guy that has people scratching there head saying, "what the eff is that guy doing here? Even though he is really, really good looking." I should add, I am comfortable with my guns and can do all the basics without any concerns.

Can you hit a 8 1/2 x 11 piece of paper at 20 yards?

Where in Ontario are you?

I am in Ajax, I shoot at the Marksman club. At 20 yards I could put 75% on the page, but probably not 100%. I haven't shot at that distance with a pistol in a while, I will try again next time I am at the range.

Ok thanks for the clarification I had the original course handout from when I first took the membership course and it just said no bolsters unless trained in whatever course. Checking on the website there is nothing mentioned about it, I even e-mailed the president but have heard nothing back. It does make sense to holster a unloaded pistol though!

It was not just safety and IPSC rules.
I cant shoot for s### but after taking the BB course I know why.
Grip on my gun was all wrong and I could not do a fast mag change to save my life.

We did how to draw from a holster, sight picture/aiming, mag changes, stance, moving, prone, kneeling, controlled pairs/double taps and more.

With our whole group. We all took turns sucking at certain stages. lol

Always a big debate on this. i prefer newbies to people who have been snooting for years because in most cases (not all) they have developed a lot of bad habits and i have to spend a lot of time breaking these habits. i am quite comfortable teaching a person who knows how to load and unload his firearm and knows how to use the controls. from there i will teach him to hit targets from 7 to 25 meters.

Black Badge course is not that advanced, it's mostly to introduce you to IPSC style shooting (including practice and theory).
If your last sentence is at least 50% true - I'd say you're ready for BB course.
I'd say all you need is to give people feeling that 100% of your shots will hit the back stop and not the roof/sky or your leg.
After you get the BB you can do advanced training, either on your own or with instructor - thankfully many of our top shooters are willing to organize such advanced courses, which I cannot recommend enough.

question

I belong to target sports in gormley ontario. I have the black badge course for CDP. We are supposed to practice thursdays. but there are only 1-4 people practising at any given time. We are supposed to start doing IPSC or IDPA, but, sadly in Target Sports looks like everything you want to do or try to do is a "no no". Primarily because the Ontario CFO frequently visits the range. And every time he visits there is a new policy to make the CFO happy. To the point we have 2 ranges, usually I shoot in the smallest one because I like to shoot fast and now I cannot use that range by myself there has to be at least 2-3 people using it as well, otherwise, you have to shoot in the larger range.

Being a member of target sports can I go and do the black badge course or IDPA in another club?

Today I visited the Frontenac Gun Club in Kingston and I cannot describe how good it felt to see members carry their guns from range to range without being harassed by someone telling you what to do because the CFO tells them.

The course for CDP is not a Black Badge Course.

I went to The Marksmen Club and the sign up sheet was gone :(

I noticed that. I actually made a post here on GunNutz to ask if anyone knows what happened. I was on the list so I am hoping it still happens. Maybe there were too many people on the list and they couldn't do it for everyone because I haven't heard a thing.
