Are Muzzle Brakes Annoying At The Range?

To be honest I have sat beside a guy that has a break on a 458 winmag, not to bad. I will say some of the AR type rifles seem to be very loud without a break, for whatever reason I don't know but they have a very loud crack to them. When your at the range you are entitled to make noise.

nothing is closely as annoying as being showered by the sks steal casings from the shooter on you left who is trying to empty the biggest number of rounds in the shortest time span without any warning....

I did understand, and wrong is wrong. Man up, admit it and get over it.

PS, Human hearing is LOGARITHMIC (curved) in nature as sensetivity to sound frequencies (more for mid, less for low end and high end sounds), it is not expressed in a ratio format (which is direct and linear in form) So while dB A weighted Logarithmic describes human hearing, dB used in NRR Ratios does not perscribe the response to human hearing.

So to answer your question, you are wrong again. and 50 can be half, or 1/4 or 1/8 of 100, it all depends at what frequency you are measuring (100,1000,10000Hz). Human hearing is Logarithmic in nature. It is not a Ratio.

Earlier you told me I was making a fool of myself? Judging by what you wrote, I have no fear of that happening in conversing with you on this topic.

It must be nice, the world you live in.

In any case I stand by what I said, because what I said was correct in relation to perceived noise level, which is what I was talking about in the first place. I did not use decibels, or pull out a numerical study of hearing protection. I stated my observations as someone who uses two layers of hearing protection everyday at work. You can tell me that what I "hear" is wrong until you are blue in the face, but that doesn't change the fact that the perceived noise reduction with the additional ear muffs is still roughly half to my ears.

You sir, are the one that went off on a tangent, have a nice day.

lmfao!

I find them mildly annoying but I certainly can't complain, as when I shoot my big black powder rifles, I make an enormous cloud of "fragrant" white smoke that sometimes blows back on all of us.

I figure we all need to get along :D

Chris.

Dumb Question ?

I go to a range to get the blast and pressure waves -

Its relaxing and soothes my nerves -

One of the reasons why I'm a shooter -

After a good blast session I dont have to go home and beat the -
"SHE WHO MUST BE OBEYED !"

Shooting is a blast ! - Blasts are welcome !

Thats why god invented hearing protection !

Getting hit in the head by hot ejecting brass however ---------

Who would complain with HOLY BLACK in the air..It all started there. I understand no muzzle breaks in F and F/TR too much stuff thrown up. But any other time wear better muffs.

Precisely, noise is just that ..... noise.

Having to explain the welts on your face for a week because during your last range day somebody set up with an AR besides you and proceeded to pelt you with hot brass all afternoon, not so much fun.

At my club there is a wall in front of the benches (with low and standing shooting ports)

i found any one shooting with the muzzle behind the wall causes a shock wave
and ask them to move forward at the bench so muzzle is past the wall
reduces shock wave greatly

7.62x39 behind the wall with no break = 338 win mag past the wall with break (my impression)

the shock wave can cause hearing loss as well as the sound
and i have found the fit of shooting glasses affect what sound/pressure get to your ears

ps :cool:found for me metal frame glasses reduce the sound the most(with muffs):D bulky plastic glasses the worst

I believe Jamie was going to download them onto the website, but if not I'm sure he has hard copy .
Cat

I couldn't find anything on the website, but it would be nice to have the rules posted at the range for quick reference.

Strangely I just laugh when somebody hits me with their ejecting brass.

If it's just once, same. Have a chuckle, and keep shooting. But I've seen how insane my SKS is with the spent casings, and I refuse to shoot it if anyone is within 3 benches to my right (Luckily the range I go to is often pretty empty). Getting one of those surplus casings in the cheek wouldn't exactly tickle! :s

On a brighter note however just a year and a half or so ago, I shot a Ruger P90 (.45 ACP pistol), and one of the casing bounced off the wall to my right and bounced off the very top my head. lol good times :p That was at the Wild West Shooting Center in the West Ed Mall. I love that place XD

I don't get what the fuss is and all the whining over brakes. You are at a range, what would you expect. If someone wants to shoot with a brake, so be it, get over it and shoot. The comment made that anything smaller than a 50 doesn't require a brake is narrow minded bulls#it. Maybe the shooter wants to spot his own rounds? Who knows. All the #####ing about ccw and the gun registry in this country and whiners are complaining about muzzle brakes. This country never ceases to amaze me.
