4.25" S&W revolvers

Like most of us on this thread I love S&W N frames and would love a model 27 with 4-1/4" barrel!! But my friend was at this years shotshow and the general consensus in the US is that we here in Canada are only 1to3% or less of there world wide sales and this is a quote" you guys are just lucky we even sell guns to you's it isn't really worth our time". So as much as we love there products it seems as we don't have the numbers to buy the product , are breath is not even worth talking to these company sale agents!! I don't own many Ruger products, but I guess if I want a gun around 4" I will have to buy an ugly dependable Ruger! Dale in T-Bay

and that will not change unless two critical things change:

1 - overzealous gun control

2 - canadian business style (use archaic exchange rates, apply excessive markups to compensate for high income taxes, etc)
 
I have written them, with no resonse, suggesting they make a 4.2" revolver. At that length the gun would be long enough for sales in Canada and be the maximum length allowed in IDPA - we have a Canadian Exemption to run up to 6" revolvers here. Seems like S&W just isn't interested.

It sounds as if some of those S&W guys need better supervision. As a business owner, I can tell you, it doesn't pay to treat small customers like small customers.

A company that thinks customers owe them a debt of gratitude for buying their products is not getting my business.

Whoever said that quote is no doubt an imbecile and a fool. S&W should fire him.

Ruger is accommodating our small Canadian market and if S&W is not interested, that's Ok too. It is not the end of the world.

Just for the record the quote was from the Remington Rep/Sale team if it matters, but for the most part this is the sentement of the large companies. When I was at the 2008 shotshow the small company Freedom Arms singleaction team was very interested and willing to build guns that were to anylength with really no additional charges, really good people! I guess small buisness relizes that every customer counts. dale in T-Bay
 
I'm curious about one thing, are these special run pistols really aimed at the Canadian market, or the California market? Kimber has a big run of special barrel lengths, as does Ruger, but I've also seem Sigs, Glocks, and HKs with protruding barrels. Surely, not all these are special Canadian models?
 
S&W doesn't seem interested in cataloguing a 4.2" barrel and they won't do individual custom orders, but the Performance Center will do special runs if they use a standard frame and cylinder, arrangements are made with a distributor, and a minimum order of 500 units is placed. John Ross of Unintended Consequences fame had a couple runs of the Model 500 made up with a 5" half lug barrel this way and there have been various other special orders from distributors like Lew Horton.

For this to happen, some dealer with connections to a S&W distributor will have to talk the distributor into ordering least 500 guns of a given model with a 4.2" barrel from S&W. The question is what model would be most likely to sell in the required quantities.

Stainless "L" frame with a full underlug barrel. Essentially a 4.2" 686. The new 7-shooters with the unfluted cylinder are nice. They already make it in 5". A 4.2 would be even better.

Two models would be of interest to IDPA shooters. 4.2" barrelled .38spl/.357mag and a 4.2" .45acp; both in Stainless. If the guns were produced they would sell both in Canada and the US ie California. Whether or not you could sell 500 of each would be difficult to determine but I suspect the demand would also come from outside the shooting sports. I am in for one of each.

Ruger states right in their catalog that the barrel is 4.2 inches for it's Canadian customers.

I would definitely be up for one of these. I like the half lugged, tapered barrel contour.

I wonder if it would be possible to set up a .45 Colt cylinder to also use .45 ACP in moon clips. That would be pretty snazzy.

That does not mean that Ruger specifically built these for Canadians.
Ruger may have thought: "Gee whiz, Canada is as stupid as California, maybe they will buy these things."

I'm not bashing Ruger. Personally I love my 10/22; I'm just saying.
