Mosquito patch

A friend raved about them so I picked up a box of 5 last weekend at a small store just north of Bancroft. The bugs were not too bad so I have not cracked them to see how they work. Interested to hear if people found them helpful or not.

Funny, the bottom of the patch website says:

" *Effectiveness of the patch is related to the intake of alcohol and tobacco "

I did not watch the video but the site was not clear if enjoying a beer will have a positive or negative impact on effectiveness...

Apparently the bugs were busy somewhere else last night. I saw all of 5 black flies, and a couple landed on me, but I didn't get any bites.

Guess I'll try again in a couple of weeks. We've been pretty dry here the last couple of months, so I think the insect cycle is a bit delayed.

I heard taking a once of apple cider vinegar a day for 3 days before going out helps make the mosquitoes from biting since they hate the smell of your blood.

The Ripple Outdoors podcast did a review of them. I've seen them in Home Hardware, but haven't picked them up yet.

Yeah this podcast had me excited but the more I researched it the more skeptical I have become. Tried eating a lot of vitamin D but with no noticeable difference. Seen the patches at WSS here in cowtown but I will stick with DEET based products.

Or try the ThermaCELL device if mosquitoes are bad when I go back to SK in 3 wks. The higher altitudes I hunt/shoot at have more deer flies than mosquitoes, which are less annoying at the time of attack, but leave welts that last for days.

But the vitamin D does reduce hangover effects so my experiments were not in vain.

We've used the thermocells for 3 years in the dense mosquito populated areas of manigotagan, MB and they get our stamp of approval..takes about 2o minutes for the area to be protected.

if it hasn't been mentioned yet. Be careful handling your guns when you have the patch on, since it changes your body chemistry it has the potential to hurt the finish on the steel parts of your guns. not immidietly of course, but if your one of the people that puts the gun away without a wipe down of oil you could come back to large rusty fingerprints.
the thermocell stuff only seems to work if your sitting in one spot, if your moving it just leaves a cloud behind you. and deet based stuff can remove the bluing from firearms.

bugs dont bother me, they literally have to be unbarable for someone else before I start to notice them. And I usually only notice them because everyone else is inside. When I use bug repelant, its muskol. nothing else works.

I just finished up six months of Pest control university classes and the only interesting thing that stuck in my head is that some of the items being sold such as the thermacell that use CITRONELLA are all possible CARCINOGENS!!!! Yup citronella caused cancer but deet doesn't.. I'm sticking to my deet! After reading all the reports on both, deet is actually much safer to use. I will try to find an online version of the data we were shown on this and post it here as I am sure there are going to be a few that just say "prove it" Have a great day!

yeah with DEET you only have to worry about neurological trouble.

Wear clothes (2 layers), gloves and bring a head net. When the bugs are really bad mechanical is the only defense.

You may want to go back and approach your professor, the Thermacell does not contact the skin, and more importantly it doesn't use citronella, it uses allethrin.

"...Vitamin B actually..." B12 perferably. A daily 500mcg pill will keep 'em away. If you do get bit, the itch goes away inside of 5 minutes. Doesn't keep 'em from flying around your head and making you crazy though.

Sorry there I was just using the thermacell as an example as I was under the impression it used citronella from it's advertising. The toxicity tests we looked at in our course involved only active ingredients and not specific "prepared" products. From the looks of it the Thermacell is using one of the safer pesticides out there.

Just nut up and let them bite you. ;)

I grew up in a buggy corner of NW Ont. and we went through the post vietnam DEET phase, the McCurdy's bear grease stage and finally settled on the suffer in silence stage. The first month of bug season is bloody (literally) hell and then all of a sudden blood chemistry kicks in and you don't feel the bites. Sweet heaven!! :dancingbanana:

Nowdays I treat myself to a tiny spray of citronella on my elbows and ears hum a happy tune. :D
