First Handgun - Like a "Honda"

given that the total package price would be the same (nice SIG plus cheap range - versus - cheaper SIG and more convenient range), i'd weigh in the range access times, as in how many timeslots are available during which to shoot, and also if one of them is a federal range then i'd give that more weight since their LTATT would cover you for all ranges, but a normal range won't cover you for the federal range.

and if all of that is equal, spend more money on what you keep versus on memberships. that means buy the gun you like more! especially if the difference is relatively small, like 10% to 20%.

No .22lr for now (or ever?), would rather dump them $$$ into 9mm ammo and practice that.

BP7 hit the nail on the head for explaining my dilemma properly (cheap gun + expensive range is = to expensive gun + cheap range)

The 2 ranges I was thinking about are Target Sports (35km 1 way) and Burlington (100km 1 way) .... Burlington is not available after work for shooting (considering the time to travel for me), but it would limit me to weekends and days off for competition purposes. The cost of range Burlington is phenomenal in comparison to Target, yes you have to keep the area tidy and help out, but I'm not in this sport to be a dirty w#@$e leaving casings all over the place/etc.

Double edged sword I guess, joining Target now would mean that next year I can save $100 on my membership and in the long run since it's closer to home it would probably be my main range.

They should offer bi-yearly installments for memberships, or even monthly fee's ... I talked to someone before about why they do not offer this service and they said it would be due to obtaining LTATTs and having to cancel them if people didn't pay - but I think it can work out to be beneficial for a lot of people starting out. $1250 gun + $650 membership + $200 ammo + ear protection $30 + PAL safety course + PAL application fee etc.

how about option

c) buy an expensive Sig and buy the expensive range membership?

lol! I would, but I wouldn't sign up until next year - having to dry fire for 3/4 of a year doesn't sound like fun to me

just out of curiosity, how much is the range membership? surely not $650!!! i shoot at a federal (DND) range and the fee is $100 first year (intro rate) and then $200 per year after that. other ranges are $200 to $400+ per year. see if you can come as a visitor once or twice to get a feel for the people RUNNING the range as well as the people you'd be shooting side-by-side with. and how easy is it to get in touch with the people running the schedules to either get alternate time slots or updates or whatnot?

another thing to think about - are you only gonna shoot at random paper targets, or do you wanna dabble in IPSC / IDPA / PPC? which club or range is more involved in that if it's something you want to do? if it's just shooting for ####s-n-giggles, which range has stricter rules on what you CAN blow apart (fruit, balloons, water jugs, etc)? what are the facilities like in the wintertime?

being Cana-ban, you can't shoot your pistol in the bushes, so sadly a big part of your decision isn't only WHAT you will shoot, but WHERE you will shoot it.

or move to Florida...

membership = $650 first year + I was told about $80 in ammo for their ATT courses (ridiculous) for a total of about $730 first year at Target

They both have leagues, the cheaper facility has leages every day of the week which is good/not so good depending on what you want to shoot. For now I am interested in paper shooting, but will shortly (within 6 months) want to shoot IPSC

huh... makes my DND range look cheaper-than-McD by comparison. and no specific course for the ATT, just accumulated supervised range time (there's always gonna be an RO present anyways). $80 in ammo is something like 100 rounds of 44 Mag, 200-250 rounds of 9mm, or 1700+ rounds of 22LR. do you get to choose? :p

Actually I think you do, between 22 up to 357 I think...

Still, big pain in the a$$ to fork out that much money all at once, monthly or bi-yearly would be ideal, 2 payments of $350 or so would be real nice

How much is Burlington? Maybe you should consider Marksmen in Oshawa. 24/7.

As for Target... 3 probationary shoots, 40-50rds per shoot. You will shoot 5 or so different calibers. ~$70 in ammo charges on top of the bloody $650 for new members.

x2 - the facility is nice, heard some people were uncomfortable with the ventilation especially at that price too!

but it's close, you have a line-driven target setup so you never have to walk down range or cease firing for people to change their targets. I recall at the SRC once a relay was done (20 minutes practice/30 tournaments) you had to wait until everyone was done to head out and change targets...well I shot all 50 in less than 6 minutes and wasn't a fan of waiting lol

Burlington is $230 first year ($180 second), I will have to look about ATT courses etc because I am not sure if there is a cost or not.

How much is Oshawa marksmen club? I have never been there so I don't even know what the facilities are like, but 24/7 near my house is pretty cool too!

What about the Aurora Gun club? Its like 15km or so more north then Target and I think its cheaper and it used to be 24/7 and cheaper. Check into it

OK, I didn't read through the 16 pages of posts. But back to the original topic of looking for a handgun that has the attributes of a Honda. No thanks; Hondas don't last. What is the oldest Honda you have seen still on the road? Give me a Ford or Chevy handgun any day. Something like a Colt or S&W.

My dad has a 1978 Honda Civic hatch, still runs beautifully! Likewise, I also have family members with old Honda's that won't stop running

I have 1978 Honda z50 (mini trail), runs amazing - actually here's a picture

A new membership at Target Sports is $605 which includes the safety course and probation shoots. Renewal rates go down to $505 per year thereafter. The initial fee or $650 assumes you aren't already a member of the CSSA, and includes membership. As for ammo, you need ammo for your probation shoots. I've yet to see a club that provides that at no cost. They even offer "probabtion packs" at a discounted rate. I'd rather pay a little more and shoot at a top notch facility like Target Sports than save abit of money and shoot at a dump thats only open one or two days a week. I've walked out of more than one range in the GTA because I though the building was going to fall down around me.

lol you're kidding right? I've seen 30 yr old civics in better shape than my 01 Ford pick up. They only came to canada about 35 years ago so that's why you don't see as many. Any idea of the repair bills it takes on those chevy's and fords you keep seeing to keep them running lol? Only thing that kills a Honda or Toyota is rust. Engines will run 500,000+k no problem.

Only thing that kills a Honda or Toyota is rust. .

Agreed, rust is a major reason why we don't see many old Japanese cars on the road. They had to replace the rusted trunk on my first Accord when it was about one year old. And the Toyota pickups that I bought new rusted away too. For us, it's been back to GMs and Fords for the last few vehicles; I think they are making a good product again.

Sorry for taking this off topic . . . or was it already off topic?

Stupid - I thought my RCMP results showed up in the mail but when I opened it was a letter saying I did not include prrof that I met the training requirements...hopefully this won't delay my application but I am on hold waiting to speak with someone now.

I was all excited for nothing :(
