Buying New ???

I think I am coming to a conclusion here. CZ.... and the hand guard sounds about right. At Epps the rifle is 699.00 plus 150 for the hand gaurd and I am in business. I have a nice Burris red dot that needs a home so thats not an issue.

Well thanks to all, and Stevo thanks for some straight answers on the accuracy and the parts issue. This really helps.

Cheers

Cameron

I like my sks d,my buddy picked up one yesterday with a ati folding stock and 3 30/5 ak mags for $400.I no offence to the cz crowd but when I held one at the last gun show it just felt.......... cheap for a $1000 you could buy a chicom sks for around $200 shipped new stock $150? You allready have a red dot, throw a couple hundred more into it if you would like, and buy 2 crates of ammo!!!!like I said no offence to the cz crowd just my 2 cents.Good shootin!

You are right on the money, but I would also like a CZ as well. Maybe next month, when my finances somewhat recoup! :)

Hmmmm, the point about the chrome barrel is also important. I know the restricted is chrome but not the non restricted. However I read some where about some spray that can help with the issue. Good thing I am taking my time about this. Usually I am so impulsive........LOL

I think the least expensive NEW for one of these 858s is on elwood epps website I know that I will be buying new just cause then I know how its been treated. As far as accurancy I was wondering that as well. I know it won't be sniper like but would like to know what to kind of expect so I know whether I have a lemon. I also know you can't expect much from surplus ammo either. Thanks for all the info. Thats what I like about these forums, lots of different opinions but if you take a bit from 'this guy' and a bit from 'that guy' you are libel to come up with a good bit of knowledge and then form your own opinion.

Thanks again

The chrome-lined barrel is only significant if you intend to totally neglect your rifle.

I just cleaned my non-res 858 the first time in about 700 rounds and 2 months. In between shooting it got a couple of squirts of WD 40 down the bore and a shot in the gas block.

I used foaming bore cleaner, a couple passes with a brass brush, and pushed a few patches through. Nice and shiny. Neat, huh?

I also kicked ass with it at our 3-Gun match today.:ar15: :)

Hey Steve,

Thanks again. I actually plan on ordering this week. I am reading up various mounts. I read a good section in here and think so far the one that replaces the front sight may be a good choice, but I am investigating your lead as well. When I finally get this thing put together I will pictures.

Glad to hear you did well yesterday!

We have barrel clamps in as well, hope to be restocked on handguards next week as well.

We should be getting in the last load of the old gen lowers with integral rails in as well and will continue our blowout pricing on these until they're gone.

And to answer the OP.. VZ all the way. Light, accurate (enough) and most of all reliable. Easy to clean. It won't let you down. While 3x more expensive than a SKS, it's also 3x the gun.

The Ruger's are a disappointment. Don't waste your money.

After a lot of study and reading I have narrowed the field to:
Ruger Mini 30: most expensive, stainless steel, reliable, reasonable accuracy in the new models. The mini-30 is the most expensive SKS money can buy - enough said. I woul'd store one in YOUR guncabinet, let alone my own. The Remington 710 of the semi-auto world IMHO. You'd be wise to steer clear. they have a crappy reputation for a reason. For the money involved in making one shoot properly, you could almost buy a Robarm XCR in 7.62x39 ;)
CZ 58 NON restricted: Moderate price, requires special mount. NOT stainless
reasonable......good (?) battle field accuracy. Like all the guns listed, no problem achieving 3MOA. Not the best rifle to mount optics on unless you do a red-dot an expensive aftermarket handguards or go with an in-line stock system and NEA mount. Expect to spend as much as the rifle costs to convert it and you haven't even bought a scope yet if you make it an inline. I like this gun in this configuration and I even have one, but be aware - this is an expensive route. Don't worry about stainless or not. Stainless rusts. Trust me.
SKS Russian variant: Cheap, Tapco stocks available, harder to clean VS CZ(?) the least accurate of the three........I think. No, the average Mini-30 is the least accurate of the three. Even the new ones IMHO. IF you buy an SKS, get the nicest one you can find and just shoot it. Fancy tacticool stocks are a waste of money on this platform IMHO. Why dress one up like a VZ when you could just go buy a VZ. These guns are GREAT for what they are and work very well if you don't try to turn it into something it is not. Most shooters would be best served by spending the price of the Ruger on an SKS and three crates of ammo for practise. Like all guns, even stainless, you have to clean it. The chlorates (salt) in corrosive primers will rust stainless steel just fine if not cleaned and oiled. Oiled metal doesn't rust - whether blued or stainless.

Here is the criteria:
2.5 to 3" MOA 100yards. I want to blast away:D all three guns can do that... well... maybe not the Mini-30.
EASY to clean as the ammo is corrosive. of those three guns, the SKS is probably the easiest to strip and clean. No tools required either.
Mounting a red dot sight is a requirement s**tty eyes.... so added cost.if you NEED a red dot, I'd go with a handguard mount on the VZ or a rear sight mount on the SKS. I wouldn't own another Ruger Mini-30 so I can't comment. When I last had one, I didn't use red dot sights yet. Ruger makes GREAT single-shots though... the No.1 is a fantastic gun.

Each rifle has advantages.I would be hard pressed to describe anything on the Ruger as an "advantage"... I have 1000.00 bucks to spend. then I would get a used CZ858-2 Tactical and an NEA front handguard for your red dot. You guys shoot more than I. I can tell if you are even considering the Ruger.

Thanks Guys!you're welcome.[/QUOTE]

Claven 2. You must have read my mind. I saw a response from Dave above, and will be contacting them early next week. I also saw the set up on Stevos response and I am going to go that way. Now I just have to get busy ordering..........tough job but somebody has to do it.

Stevo, silly me I looked at another sight....I was investigating the gunzilla product. I see them at GP as well. I love that set up and I will still have the money for the first crate of ammo.

I REALLY appreciate the effort you guys have made. I am now very comfortable with the decision. THANKS!!

All done ordered the CZ............plus a 5 round clip....I hate the 5/30s. I will be ordering 3 more shortly after I get the rifle so I can have 20 loaded rounds. Sweet!

Good for you. Now make sure you buy at least 2 or 3 cases of ammo to go with it.

The 5/5's are nice for off the bench. Other than that kinda pointless, IMO. They don't fit in pouches, they're harder to change quickly, and they're too expensive.

Stevo: Thanks you I joined the fraternity.........Maybe just 1 more 5 rounder then. I like the looks with the 5....hehehe 2 fives in the chest pockets and 4 5/30s in the pouch. Next up is the forearm and upper mount.

I'm a die hard fan of the SKS, and I especially enjoy shooting kazillions of rounds with good prices of 7.62x39 ammo. Having that said, if you want absolute accuracy in x39, go with the the CZ527 bolt action. My Lady picked one last year and it shoots 3/4 inch groups at 100 yards, surplus ammo included. A beautiful little carbine that is very well made.
