I can't take credit for this one, a member of HBC gave me the idea when I asked the question of the members on HBC. A few years back on I asked how they kept their meat cool till they got the time to cut it. One member showed me this link.

I've since raised the lid on mine using 2x10's and made some T bar hangers. From lid to bottom of the cooler is now 36"
The freezer was found on Craigslist for free. Nobody want's the big ones anymore.
This is the controller. I think even with the recent mods I've not spent too much over $120. When the freezer kack's a day or two on CL and I've got another one!!

FWIW the controller can be had in a waterproof unit for the gang that want to put this set up trailer and use a genny for a bush unit.

Here's a few pics of the unit in action!!

I wonder what could be done in a trailer mounted, 110 powered unit?

Good friend of mine did a unit much like mine but found a water proof temp controller. Now he's got a 12cuft freezer on the front of his flat deck trailer and a 1000amp Honda genny. He dosen't hang his game, but lays it on racks for transportation.

I just bought the same controller a coupel of hours ago, I am making a fermentation chamber out of an old freezer for brewing beer, you can get way without one for ales but for a lager you need to brew at 10C and if you can get your ales a couple of degrees below room temp you will get a much cleaner brew.

There are tons of examples on howbrewtalk.com of the very same thing except without the hangers. I have a similar (analog) thermostat running my keg fridge or "keezer"

In fact they are arguing over my last thread I started as we speak... lol

Great idea. Is there any way to modify the oem controller and save that cost?

There are cheaper controllers out there, simple analog ones but from what i can tell, no you cannot modify the oem... you could just put blocks of ice in there though, if you had a drain to get the water out. Check out the Hombrew supply sites for more models like this one (in Canadian funds) http://www.homebrew-supplies.ca/via...=controller&search_category_id=67&item_id=589

And the one originally posted is available in the US for $52

Just found this thread today while searching other things. Can someone answer a few questions for me:
So, basically the Johnson Controlls unit is a new thermostat/switch that turns on the freezer and shuts it off at the desired temperature you set?
Essentially turning the freezer into a cooler or fridge?
You are by-passing the use of the freezers thermostat?

You can use any old freezer but it has to be in working condition?

The fan mounted inside is just for moving the cold air around? It is NOT exhausted to the outside?

Would it be a good idea to add some more insulation? I was thinking you could glue some ridged polystyrene foam to the inside. Of course this would take up space but would it run more efficiently.
Thanks for your help.

For a game cooler I would just use a 2 air conditioners.

take the temp sensor out and leave outside the cooler.....can even put it close to a heat source like a light bulb....that way the air conditioner will run alot cooler.

Hook up a timer to run one air conditioner to run for 2 hours....then shut down....and start the other one....cycle them like that and they won't freeze up.

There is a custom sensor unit you can buy called a Coolbot. but pretty expensive.
