Fake Can/Suppressor - Illegal?

just thought it would be a cool upgrade to my rifle.

You can also pick up airsoft lasers, universal night sight and a host of other fake items to make it look cool. To each his own but you might find that purchasing some reloading equipment, or a new scope, better ammo, laser range finder, ballistic software, binos, HS Precision/McMillan stock....heck other stuff that might actually improve your skills...rather than adding fake accessories. I mean knock yourself out but precision shooting is an expensive hobby...trust me.

All I am saying is you might want to target your shooting $ a bit better. I won't knock you for whoring up your rifle for tacticool effect...but being a student must make your $ rather tight...

If you like the look get one! It will drive all the Fudds nuts and its worth it for that alone:D. Will work to re-direct the flash/noise downrange too if thats a concern. The only time that would be usefull is if the optics are flush with the flash hider (Front mount night vision etc) Get one thats threaded the same as the flash hider/brake your getting;)

Reading comprehension fail...

I'm saying that putting the fake can on the end of the barrel makes it a "poorly designed" flash suppressor.

I'm talking about using the actual device you planned on using, but then making a functional analogy since your 'fake can's' inner channel will direct noise and blast downrange.

ah yes, i like that idea.

i am actually thinking of getting a brake for my .308 now and possibly getting a fake can for my M&P 15-22. that gun has tacticool written all over it.

I agree. I prefer function over form. Yes it's nice to have a tacticool looking rifle but really, if there is no function why bother? Do what pleases you but there may be better ways to spend your money. It's not really an upgrade. More of a decoration.

See, it's that kind of attitude that will keep folks from spending thousands on the latest greatest semi mil tacticool super sniper rifle mister. That will be enough of that kind of talk, you trying to ruin the economy?:D - dan

or more likely...it will do absolutely nothing.

Heres what happens when you shoot a 6 lb unbraked boomer prone in a t shirt: (and no, it is not a leg. It is a big, thick arm)

meh ... to each their own ... you want a fake suppressor by all means get one ... to those who don't agree, well then disagree ... I'm waiting for the day we can put an ACTUAL suppressor on a rifle ... but I think I'll see pigs fly before then ... ;) :D

If one were to take the position of Devils advocate, one could argue that even a fake can reduces the sound level. But, like many areas of our laws, this has not been tested in court, so remains an area of debate.

It all depends on the design of the fakie but most are made to not reduce sound measurably. There is no limit to the sound reduction in CDN law but our law does specify that the device must be designed or intended to reduce sound. Thus intent is a factor. For example, bloop tubes undoubtedly reduce the sound signature to a degree but that isn't what they are intended for so they are legal.

Probably the biggest issue is that almost nobody in Canada knows how to properly sound test a suppressed firearm. It takes specialized and very expensive equipment and a specific test protocol to get it right.

Personally I think fake suppressors are silly and worse, likely to attract the wrong kind of interest from the police but they are legal as long as they are done properly.

Does the "I'm in the process of becoming one" mean that because you are in the process of becoming a cop, give you the right to put a fake suppressor and think you can talk your way out of it if questioned??...

Tell ya one thing....If I stopped you, I would charge your for poss. prohib. device and let you prove it in court that it's fake..nevermind seizing your rifle as well...

... which makes you the worst kind of Law Enforcement Officer.

Nice first post, by the way.
