Iam thinking of building a 10.5 SBR AR15. I was wondering if it used a carbine length gas tube as well as handguard? One more noob question Why is the 10.5 barrel refered to as a pistol barrel? Please post any pics of your own 10.5 sbr builds. Any advice is welcome.

1. Yes and Yes.
2. Because in the US every "rifle" barrel under 16" is a pistol barrel (if mounted on a receiver that never had a stock) or a registered NFA firearm.

Carbine gas system.
well except the Hk416 but pretty much the same anyway

Does anyone have any suggestions of where to shop for a barrel? I have been looking around I wonder if I have may have missed a few places. I have been looking at the RRA 10.5 from Questar.

Port pressure and time under pressure (or dwell as some call it).

10" guns uncork quicker than 11.5 - so they need a much quicker gas impulse delivery.

Diemaco's first C8CQB's where 10" now they are 11.5

We used to do 10.3 and 10.5" barrel, but found 11.5" much more forgiving.

Obviously 14.5" gun are even more forgiving, and midlength and rifle length guns more so.

However we find 14.5" guns are better with midlength gas systems, and Crane found the 18" guns better than 20".
As well we found 16" guns with carbine gas system do not work as well as 16" midlength.

That said the C8SFW does run very very well with a carbine gas a 16" bbl.

Secret ?? what are they doing to accomplish that ??

Interesting to know that 14.5" guns work well with mid-length, since the muzzle to gas port distance is short.

See, told you Mr B would have all the answers. :)

So are you guys saying that anyhting under 11.5" is ineffective? Does that mean those 7.5" or 8.5" barrels are not up to the task?

The problem after reliability in a 7.5" or 8.5" is fragmentation, muzzle velocity doesn't allow for the tumbling and fragmentation once it hits a Bad Guy, but considering that we shoot paper in Canada the later should not be all that much of a problem. You have to remember 5.56 round relies on that fragmentation to be effective.

There is a chart somewhere that shows muzzle velocities based on common length barrels and commonly used ammo like M855 and MK262 stuff. Even 10.5" velocities have problems fragmenting out past 100 meters.
