3-Gun in Peace River, Results (sorta) and pics!!! Tons and tons of pics!

What type of shotgun ammo is used in these comps? ie. slugs, buckshot or birdshot? Cheers Roscoe Looks like fun!

In all the matches that I have shot in Southern BC, Southern Alberta and Southern Saskatchewan during the last 24 years the upper limit has been set at #4 lead shot in order to prevent richochet problems from steel targets that are at times only 5-10 meters in front of you.

And that's the way it was at this match.

That said, if a future stage has a 50m popper, you're going to need a slug (or two) to knock it down.

Is there much shooting prone(laying down) in this sport? I was at the range today and just for fun I laid down to see how it would feel. Man do I need to work on my flexability or what. I am getting up there but thought I am in pretty good shape, but it would have been a strain to shoot any type of gun from that position. Started stretching tonight. Cheers Roscoe

There is prone shooting in 3 gun but most times positions aren't specified to prone. Most COF in our match's have a built in penalty if you cannot complete the COF as it is specified. Most of all, the match is about having fun, so if you can't do it you can't do it. Prizes at our last match were random and they will be this match as well.

One more question, what type of holsters are required? Do they need some type of locking system. I have Comp Tac gear that I like, just tension fit, not sure what they would be like to run with? They can be tightened up with the screws. Are these type OK?
Cheers Roscoe

Most of run a level 1 type of holster which is what you are describing. Some run level 2 and some of the LEO run a Level 3. It will work. It is all good with us. We are not about running hard and beating each other up. We are about having fun and making some friends while shooting.

Any other questions, just ask.

I'm going to set up a friendly three gun match at my local club, but have never done it before. Where did you guys get ideas for your stages? I've searched for some ideas, but the stage designs were really complex!

We should have a stage exchange section on this site.

We came up with them ourselves. Most were original, one was a modification of El Presidente for pistol, rifle, and shotgun. In the past I've used themes like "movie gunfights" to get ideas. I did one stage based on the start of the epic gunfight in Heat.:ar15:

Stages don't need to be complex to be good. One of our stages had only one target and 5 shooting positions x 2 shots. Only 10 rds of rifle on the stage, but it was interesting and challenging.

Google IDPA scenarios for some pistol stages. They can be used by themselves for pistol-only stages or as a base to build pistol/rifle/shotgun stages on. If you have props available, you can work around those. If there are particular skills you want to test, you can base stages on that. The layout of your range can suggest ideas, as well.

For a first event, keep it simple and straightforward.

If you want, pm me if you have more questions.

Thanks for the info

Hey, thanks for the speedy replies. I am into this sport. My son and I did a smaller version of this minus the handgun. I am going to try and get something going around here. Cheers Roscoe
