So...a few years back Remington started making those 710 models and selling them with a scope etc fairly cheap. I heard a lot of "stories" which may or may not have been true, some from a dealer, who said the barrels were not even ordanance steel and could be "shot out" in no time - so no good he tells me. Was he trying to sell me a higher quality? Or BS'ing me? Who knows?

My experience with Rem 7600/760/700 has all been positive - no barrel issues in fact no issues at all.

Question - so what's the dirt on these VTR & XTR etc rifles. The new triangular barrell with factory porting etc? Are they accurate? Do they stand up to lots of use? Am I going to shoot it out in one season?

I would appreciate some feedback prior to purchase.
Thanks
Marty

Some people say one thing some say another. I have two of the VTR (triangle) in 308. Using factory 167gr BTHP Sierra Match King ammo, pretty much the same hole at 100 yards. Same as with my R25. The recoil is lighter on the 700.

i went to the gun dealer in mcadam nb. i had 1000 dollars for a new 22-250. i was told by one of the guys working there to stay away from those guns due to quality. i ended up buying a steven 200 in 22-250, bushnell trophy scope 3-9x and i put a boyd stock on it with a harris bi pod and still saved a few dollars. just my 2 cents.
cheers

While the Stevens is certainly a good rifle, I wouldn't and didn't hesitate to buy a Remington 700 SPS. Factory ammo (Hornady) gives me consistent 1/2" groups @ 100 yards.

the VTR is a regular 700 with triangular flats milled onto the barrel...the action is the same as a 700 in many other models...I'm pretty sure barrels come from the same bin before they are milled....if the VTR is a problem,..all 700's are a problem,..not likely.

I agree with Rembo.
I have talked to alot of A-holes over the years in gun shops trying to sell me guns i don't want. if you like the VTR buy it, if it shoots well keep it, if it's not up to your standards, sell it.

Just my two cents.
