Savage 110 Ba or Rem 700 Police in .338 lapua?

A rifle chambered in 338 Lapua is not a suitable rifle for little boys with bony shoulders, thin wallets, and dreamy eyed visions.

Hahaha well, I'm all three. It hasn't stopped me before. :D

Got a Front Focal 8.5x25 mark 4 leupold today, and all my reloading dies, lapua brass, bullets (250's and 300 gr scenars), primers and powder today.... now just to decide on a rifle.... hmmmmmmmm

Anybody have any complaints about the AR-30?

As to the Rem 700p, it sounds like there were barrel problems at one point, how do I determin which guns these are??? If I roll up to the shooters edge or frontier and buy one, I want to make sure its not a oldy with the crappy barrel finish.

You know how you have the bug hard? You find yourself 3 hours late for a Stampede party on opening day, because you've been too busy researching rifles.... No cowgirls for me tonight

You remind of the kid with a pocket full of condoms and nothing to use them with.

Dont be a fool pard. Saddle up and hustle down to the party.

If you handload it's not all that expensive. dan

I got curious about this so I ran some numbers just for interest's sake, to see what it would cost to load 1000 rounds of .338 Lapua compared to .308 Winchester. I'll admit it wasn't as stark a difference as I had expected, but that doesn't make the .338 Lapua cheap to shoot either. Not surprisingly brass and powder represent the greatest differences between the two cartridges. I had expected a large disparity in the price of bullets, but not so much, as MKs are almost the same price for 300 gr .338s and 175 gr .308s. Allowing for 100 pieces of new Lapua brass for both cartridges, and 100 gr of powder for the .338 and 45 grs for the .308, with primers and bullets being the same price, I got $1219 for the .338 Lapua and $787 for the .308. I could have cut the cost of shooting the .308 down by choosing Winchester brass, but I wanted to keep the comparison fair. It was a far cry from the $10 a round I expected for the .338 Lapua.

I agree, my cost calcs are;

280$ for 100 pc lapua brass
84$ for 100 300 gr scenar's
28.13$ per pound of Retumbo (bought in bulk)
37$ for 1000 CCI LRM primers.

Assuming I get 10 reloads per case and use a 93 gr load(reasonable I think?) my cost per shot is;

(280/1000)=0.28
(84/100)= 0.84
(37/1000)= .037
(28.13/7000)*93)= 0.38
Total= $1.537 per shot. Not crazy, not cheap.

Boomer where did you get your prices? I may need to order some supplies where you do :) My stuff is just internet prices for things in canada, no deals.

My point exactly. Some myths seem to have grown around the costs associated with the 338 LM, which get perpetuated online repeatedly. It just isn't that expensive. And you don't need a 5k tacticool rifle to shoot (and do it well) the caliber. Sure, those guns are a lot of fun, but they aren't required by any means, and I think that all the talk of the "great expense" keeps a lot of younger shooters from even trying it out. To our detriment as a group. FWIW - dan

If you put an AICS stock on a rem700MLR in 338lapua, recoil isn't that bad, accuracy is pretty good with the Original factory barrel 26". and lapua brass one fire $1/round.

Our prices are similar, except that I priced out MKs and you priced out Scenars, I allowed more for primers and based the price on 100 gr load for the .338.

where are you getting the MK's, WSS has them, but they want more then I can get Scenars for. I will try the MK's also if they are a bit cheaper, as I have had great luck with Sierra products.

I bit the bullet and ordered a Savage 110 BA, its funny, I think I prefer the looks of the remington the most, and the AR the next, but I love the Savage trigger, it has a good break from the factory, a 26" 1 in 9 barrel, and a 20 moa rail. So I will give it a whirl. I sure hope its as accurate as another member's on here (1" group at 300 yrds)

I want to strip all the stupid un-needed rails off of it though and make it look a little nicer. Does anyone know if a regular savage 110 rail will fit these?

The gun is on pre-order status (looks like after I ordered mine they took it off the site even) and won't be here for a few weeks but oh-well... My brass and dies are a week or two out in the mail anyways.

Thanks for the help guys, when I get her set up I will add some pics.

Should be okay, for the most part Savage has had pretty good luck for their factory barrels, and if not it's a breeze to change barrels on a savage. No idea if a regular rail will fit, call savage directly and they'll give you the answer right quick.

As a quick side note, you may be able to extend the case life even further if you anneal the case necks. It takes some practice to do correctly and it does require you to pay careful attention, but there have been more there's more then ample evidence benefiting case life.

A brake doesn't cost much either. - dan

If you plan out you break interm of measurement and tooling, in an Hour or so you could have a very nice looking break, with CNC is much faster for sure, but access to equipment is difficult.

So I got my savage, looks great! The 50mm objective scope with Leupold "medium" mark 4 rings barely fits, the sun shade or the flip cover won't fit with these rings. However the scope is close to the barrel! :D I might replace the whole quad rail deal with a 20 moa (or 40, my scope is right in the middle with this "20 moa" stock rail....) with a normal rail, the gun is finished nice under the bulky rail deal.

I'm happy with it, my brass and bullets are not in, so I threw 94 grs of RL25 behind some cheapo 225 grn Hornady sst's in some super expensive (more the lapua) Norma brass I got locally, and shot-cleanedshot-cleaned a few times... I'm not sure if I believe the whole break in the barrel bit, but for the first 4-5 shots why not? It sure leaves a crater in the ground, and I think my Neighbors thought I lit a few bombs off tonight... hahaha.

Hopefully by Monday I will have shot some groups with it, if my Lapua brass and bullets don't get here tomorrow, it will be with the Norma brass and 225 grn hornady's.

.22lr vs .223 rem vs .338 Lapua just for laughs.

Just an FYI for all you fellas still interested...... The Remmy does come with a brake that is more than satisfactory for even full house 338LM loads.

Nice buy P-J, I had the same dilemma, I went the other way.

All in after the 20MOA rail, ATRS bolt handle, timney trigger and a bedding job the Remmy was with-in $100 of the Savage.

Cheers!

Pretty hard to compare, but I would take the Savage, unless the Rem700MLR come with an AICS and a Mar scope mount and different muzzle break.

Had a look at one of the Savages last week.
First thing I would do is remove that ridiculous rail system. Either put it on the mill and reduce it to a scope base, or install a scope base and sell the rail to a mirror kommando.
Apart from that, the rifle is pretty interesting. Handles better than it looks.
