Got a new toy today...

I'm a revolver person myself, but if you insist on that criteria, a full sized Glock would probably serve you best.

Interesting... The only thing I like about revolvers is that they don't toss your brass around. Otherwise, I find them a bit clumsy. I must admit, my experience with revolvers is somewhat limited so in the right environment and qualified mentor, I could be swayed...

50m isn't going to happen (satisfactorily at least) with any normal service pistol in any calibre - you might shoot 15 inches, and if you do it with a DA first shot, you're a h*ll of a shooter

I've noticed at my own range that when a person showes up with a goosed up semi auto that they can't miss fast enough, yet with a decent revolver, you hear more metal getting hit than missed.

Why not? Most well-constructed pistols might group 3 inches at 50 yards off a rest. The remainder is practice.

If I can consistantly hit the paper at 50 yds, I will be thrilled. I have shot 3" groups with a 92F at 25 yds. I have shot 5" groups with a heavy barrel 22/45 at 50 yds. I like a challenge and will work hard to achieve consistancy anywhere from 25-50 yds with my new toy.

On another note, is there a break-in requirement/reccommendations for a NIB SIG 9mm?

I find that shooting 6" groups at 25 yards is fairly straightforward with a 10mm Glock.

I think anyone who actually PRACTISES at 50 yards should be able to get well under a foot, seeing as I don't actually shoot at 25y more than once every few months.

And if you can get under 12" groups, you are looking at effective torso hits IMO.

With a bit of practise I think a good 9mm sig could be driven down to 6" groups at 50 yards. It wouldn't be quick but I think it could be done, just based on my experience at 25 yards.

On the other hand I will be the first to admit that I shoot roughly 3 foot groups at 100 yards with my Glock, which is worse than a 6" group at 25 yards, of course.

Good choice on the P226 AWOL....I hope!:D

I say that because I am just waiting for transfer paperwork so I can get mine and get out to the range, my first pistol. I'm pretty jazzed about taking up a new kind of shooting. I did shoot one prior to deciding to purchase it, almost went with the 229 but settled on the 226 instead. I think it was the right way to go, time and practice will tell.

Cheers!

Well constructed PPC revolvers group 3 inches at 50 yards, with specialized barrels, big sights, soft triggers and tailored loads (and about a thousand dollars worth of expert gunsmithing, doing things you don't even think of until you see them first hand). Shooting at 50 yards consistently is very different from shooting at shorter ranges, because every 1/16th of an inch of sight misalignment (even assuming the pistol has the repeatability, and the ammo has the consistency) extrapolates out over the range involved - there's an equation that expresses the relationship (which I've forgotten), but it's somewhere around 2 inches to the 1/16th of an inch at the muzzle, on a 6 inch revolver with 8 1/2 inches between the front and rear sights. The PPC revolver that groups 3 inches at 50 will pile all six on top of themselves at 25 (about an inch), the Sig - while an excellent pistol - will shoot a hair under 2 inches at 25 yards. There's a reason the PPC Duty Pistol match only goes out to 25 yards.
