Lobbying for handgun hunting

Here's the question........
How many gun nutters would be willing to start a lobby to parliament to allow those of us who are already legal handgun hunters, who have already proven that we wish to comply with the laws of the land, who have already jumped through all of the hoops to legally own a handgun, to hunt with, and carry our handguns in the bush? We are a minority, but the vocal minorities are the ones that are heard. I know that there are going to be a lot of people out there that are adamantly opposed to this idea; even a lot of those that are on gun nuts will be opposed to the idea. Those people don't count though. If someone believes that the serious restrictions that have been placed on us over the last 50 years are correct, It is my opinion that those people don't deserve to own the right to own a gun. This is about freedom.........we are not criminals. Death with handguns is statistically insignificant compared to vehicular homicide in Canada, yet the Liberals of this country have stripped us of freedoms, we need to fight to get these freedoms back . If we sit back and do nothing, they will only strip us of more freedoms. We are the ones who need to fight for this freedom, and if we don't try, we deserve what we get.

this probably belongs in the politics forum, but myself i'd be much more inclined to have (and support) a CCW allowance than hunting.

First, I have to say that as of now, I do not hunt. I would like to learn eventually but that's not in the cards just yet.

A while back, a government official who knew a whole lot of sweet F-A about hunting or handguns decreed that handguns were unsuitable for hunting due to being too weak and too innaccurate. And that still apparently includes the purpose-designed guns, such as those chambered in .460 and .500 S&W.

But if they did decide to allow it once again, we're looking at one more snag: the CFO's. Even if the Federal says we can hunt with handguns again, the CFO's still control the ATT's and the ATC's that would be required to do this legally. And speaking for Ontario, Quebec and BC at the very least, I can't see those anti-gun bureaucrats (whose decisions are final and not open to appeal) granting them...

Yep. What you are talking about is actually two fights. You need to fight ministry of natural resources to allow hunting with a handgun. Then you need to fight the CFO to get an ATC to carry in the bush.

I'm not holding my breath.

Again, if we're not willing to fight for it, we deserve to loose it. Freedom is not free, government wishes to control absolutely, and we are accountable for what choose to (or not to) do.

Stuff like what you are saying is called watering down. If you support handgun freedoms then you should support all aspects of of them, not just the niche that particularly interests yourself.

i wouldn't be AGAINST it, but thus far hunting is at the very least allowed with rifles and shotguns. currently, self-defense is frowned upon altogether.

but in either case, i'm pro-choice / pro-freedom / pro-do-as-you-wish, in ALL areas.

cool. as long as they leave it open to ALL calibers in that case. i would hope that they don't put a caliber / barrel restriction on it, like 8" or longer and 44mag or larger - cuz that would effectively block out the CCW avenue

Baby steps. Establish a purpose and then get the permits. If you are successful in getting handgun hunting allowed, then you have demonstrated a legitimate reason to have a handgun in the bush. Then we can switch the focus to the CFC/CFOs to issue permits so we can participate in that activity. For sure it will be a long and difficult battle but I believe if it is ever to come to pass, that is how it will happen. Personally I would love to have the chance to take a whitetail with my 44.

I agree, but this can't be a one-man show.

It is strange that the Govt does not trust us with short guns when hunting in the woods.

A 22lr pistol would be great for grouse and not add much weight....

Just as a point of info, I wrote a letter advocating handgun hunting to Stockwell Day when he was Public Safety Minister. I never received an acknowledgement or reply. That didn't surprise me too much. This is a subject no politician, particularly in a minority situation, wants to discuss or say in writing anything that could be remotely construed as being pro-hand gun. (Remember the big flap when CSSA was going to raffle off a pistol.)

Still, it doesn't hurt to write letters or lobby in other ways. It at least reminds politicians that there is an interest group of voters dissatisfied with the current absurd restrictions.

...I don't know anything about hunting but my CSMAFAR trainer who is also the hunting trainer told us it was stupid to hunt with handguns....

I must say I never really understood why people make statements like this (I am referring to the quoted "Trainer" not the poster). It is ignorant to make blanket statements about any subject and even worse to belittle another shooting sport just because you don't understand it.

I would put it to anyone that half the fun in handgun hunting would be the challenge of getting the perfect shot. Having a rifle just makes this a bit easier it does not insure it. Also modern handguns are more than capable of killing a wide variety of large game not to mention the advantage of being able to carry a .22 to hunt Grouse while out on a deer hunt for example.

I personally think that hunting with bow would be much more likely to cause injury to an animal rather than a quick death. I however fully support anyone who wants to bow hunt and know it just takes a little skill and control to kill and animal cleanly. Just because you don't understand something (especially a shooting sport) please don't ruin it for others who maybe have a bit more skill and knowledge then you do.

I fully support handgun hunting.

OK rant over..... peace and love to all :)
