Old shotgun question

From http://www.rcmp-grc.gc.ca/cfp-pcaf/fs-fd/antique-historique-eng.htm :
If you own only antique firearms you do not need to:
get a firearms licence; or
register any of your antique firearms.
Shotguns:
manufactured before 1898 that can discharge only rim-fire cartridges, other than 22 Calibre Short, 22 Calibre Long or 22 Calibre Long Rifle cartridges;
manufactured before 1898 that can discharge centre-fire cartridges, other than 10, 12, 16, 20, 28, or 410 gauge cartridges
Provided I'm understanding that right, as long as it's rimfire or doesn't use a modern cartridge, then you're alright.

Seeing as the OP stated that the gun is 12 ga, if is a centerfire breechloader, it would be subject to registration.

A shotgun made in 1870 is likely to have damascus barrels and BP only. Like tiriaq says, a 12 ga. is registerable.

Tiriaq is correct. Because it is not an old obsolete gauge. It is subject to registration.

If it was a 24 or an 8 gauge, that met the age requirement, then you would not need to.
