Leverevolution 30-30 bullets availibility and worth it

Hi everyone

I'm pretty sure this must have been covered before but tried searching for a while and couldn't find anything so here it is.

What do you guys think of the hornady leverevolution 30-30 and what hornady claims about it.

I read a few article but couldn't make my mind, some claimed it was good, others it was bulls***
My bottom line was it started being worth it past 100yds

Also, Can you find these bullets for reloading ? I searched the internet but couldn't find them and some say they won't be made available by hornady.

The component bullet is known as FTX. They are available from Cabellas and Wholesale sports. This ammo really wakes up my mod 94, so much so i have to get a taller front sight to work with my williams peep at reasonable ranges. Groups well at 100yds, but at about 8" high.
 
The Hornady leverevolution ammo is loaded with a different type of powder to give it a bit more zip for lack of a better word than reloaders can purchase over the counter,that plus the FTX bullet is what give the leverevolution ammo a flatter downrange trajectory and more energy on the target.

The FTX bullet is available as a component bullet for reloading you own but I don't think you can match the MV with available powders from what I have be reading from most reloaders.

I think it's a good bullet for lever guns over the traditional RN or FP especially if your going to be shooting past 100 yds. Also be aware you may need to trim your case lengths shorter to accommodate the FTX bullet.

Loading FTX™ bullets requires some specialized techniques in certain
cases. To achieve a high ballistic coefficient we had to lengthen the
ogive, or nose, of the bullet. Sometimes this requires that the cartridge
case to be trimmed shorter than the suggested .010" under SAAMI Max
length that we recommend for conventional bullets. Follow prescribed
trim lengths exactly as presented in the FTX™ data for optimum results.

35 grains of Reloder 15 under an FTX wil come dam close to the leverevoloution round at around 2270fps. without access to the proprietary blend powders hornady uses, that is as close as i think you can get to it.
 
Interesting, thanks alot for the info guys, I'll certainly be trying it on my 336

Are FTX bullets way expensive ? Is it worth it to reload rather than buy whole boxes ? Keeping in mind I will have the rolading gear any ways.

How hard is it to trim the cases ? I'm buying a lee 50th anniversary kit, does it have what I need to do it and will it be a pain in the ass ?

Not hard at all the kit your buying comes with the lock stud & cutter which will fit in a cordless drill and the chamfer/deburring tool for cleaning up the inside and outside of case neck after it's trimmed,however you need to buy the correct case length gauge/shell holder set for the caliber you loading.

The trimmed case length on the 30-30 using the FTX is 2.029,in some instances you may find the trimmer gauge trims the case a little shorter or longer a little shorter would be fine if it's longer you can remove a little at a time the metal off the end of the pin till you get it like you want. But you want know if you will need to do that till you get a case length gauge and trim one and measure it with you digital calibers.

It is very easy to extend the max OAL of the marlin 336 or 1895 actions. Just get a wild west guns "bear proof" ejector and file back the cartridge stop on the shell carrier and extra .040" or so. This improves the reliability of feeding and ejecting at the same time.

Loading FTX bullets in a standard length case, you can load 'em faster than Hornady.
 
BTW, if I read you right, you're suggesting that I modify the gauge tool right? So I guess afterwards It won't be no good to reload regular 30-30 ammo ?

Well the Hornady spec. for the 30-30 case length using the FTX bullet is 2.029,the Lyman manual case trim to length for use ordinary RN of FP 30-30 bullets is 2.028 so it appears that the 30-30 case doesn't have to be trimmed back .010" as some other cases do. Unless the Lee case length gage is way out of spec. you should be able to just use it as is to trim the cases for with whatever bullet you choose.

Thats what you needed,once you trim a case let us know what it measures out at.
 
any body knoiw if it comes in 3855 and ho owuld it work in an old 94 that is in real good shape .i am considering using the gun for bear this year DUTCH

I've taken the 94 out for several strolls but haven't taken a deer yet with the lever evolutions in it. I'm kinda anxious to see what it does.

On another note, for those who only have one gun (in 30-30) it gives a little more down-range potential for moose.

Also, it was good to read some of the info posted here related to reloading the FTX.
 
Loaded thousands of the FTX's.

Best powder for it BY FAR is the IMR 8208 XBR.

FTX's cost around $37 for 100.

Stopped using them because of the cost and how much I shoot.
Otherwise a spectacular bullet.

CRIMP ALL AMMO for a tubular magazine. Very important.

I have taken several deer with the leverevolutions in my Marlin. They have all been bang flops. The furthest was a measured 265 yards and the wound was devestating. These are my go to round for my 30/30.
