I thought I saw posts on this, but haven't found them....

Ruger's got its 4.2" barrel- any other manufacturers doing this?

And, if so, who would opt for 4.2" vs 5" or 6", and why?

4.2" is cool because we couldn't have it before. Longer barrels would be more accurate tho so it depends what you want it for. Personally I'd go with 4.2" or 5"

4.2 is (almost) as short legally possible without 12.6 status, and it's short enough to be easy to shove into a holster, and it's also the MAX length for IDPA in the USA, so if you wanna do IDPA in canada AND usa, then you go 4.2" and not 6".

it's not the size of the bait, it's how you wiggle the worm! :p

as far as i know, it's only Ruger who happens to have one that straddles both markets. in canada, IDPA allows up to 6" since most people don't have 12.6 status, and in the USA IDPA allows up to 4.2" so in the USA, you can use a snub-nose S&W easily yet it's 12.6'd here. and S&W doesn't care about canada, and IDPA canada allows 6", so really no incentive for S&W to make a 4.2" - their snubs are OK in the usa and their 6" are ok here.

ruger is just that much more accommodating and "smart" - they make a model which fits both markets with minimal fuss. AFAIK neither S&W nor Taurus do that, and most of the other revolvers i've seen are based on the Colt SAA so they're SA and long.

Only Ruger, but, you can get them shortened... Barry at Bits Of Pieces is the man for this. However, be prepared to wait... I'm going on 3 months now for my Super RedHawk :(

Let's not flatter ourselves here. Ruger doesn't make the 4.2" models just for Canada, they do it because Kalifornia has a similar barrel length restriction to ours and that market is big enough to justify the work for Ruger. Selling them up here is just a bonus for them and us. I do appreciate that at least one company is willing to work within these idiotic restrictions as best they can to make their customers happy.

i THOUGHT Ca. had the same issue- but I've talked to S&W cust support and they weren't aware of it.

I would have to go looking, but I have heard from a number of places that the 4.2" Rugers were for Kali, not Canada. I will check with an internet contact who lives in Kali and see what he says about that.

IIRC A CGNer posted a while back that he contacted Ruger and was told the guns were made for us?... The NAA Mini-Master is made with a 4.2" barrel as well. They are a ton of fun!

I had a factory Ruger Redhawk with 4.2" and I measure the barrel with a set of vernier calipers... it was 105mm (4.13") :p But, a semi lacks a cylinder (so even with the "short barrels", revolvers are still too long ;)).
