Hello CGners, need advice (long read)

Ive been on the site for awhile and have not really posted much if at all. Bunch of army buddies got me to join and I have really enjoyed watching the equipment exchange and among other threads. I do have my license and was an avid hunter at a very early age fired my winchester 30/30 at age 7. After mom and dad got divorced the hunting quickly stopped and it was something that was shelved in my life for many years. within the last 5 years (im 27 btw) I have gone out 3 times with a cousin who hunts very regularly. I don't have my childhood 30/30 anymore but want to get back into hunting with pops. Id much rather go out with my own gun rather than have to use my old 30/30 or whatever he wants me to use.

Oh the best part of the story I found some 24k gold in my house in the downstairs recroom bar. I weighed it at roughly 5oz of scrap 24k. I took it to 3 places first a pawnshop the guy wouldn't even tell me what gold was going for and all he would say was "whatya want for it". So I went to Money Mart and the girl weighed it and said she never seen anyone bring something like this in before. She ran some gold tests and said its 22k forsure because they don't have a test past that and estimated me $3200 for it. She wasn't cleared to make a transaction that high so she had to talk to someone high up who basicly ended up saying they will give me $1900 for it and thats at the 14k rate. She suggested I go to a reputable jeweler or goldsmith, I figure Independent Jewelers is pretty big so I went there to get more info or possibly sell. They wouldn't buy the gold but gave some very sound advice. They suggested I have them melt the gold into 1 piece for $50 and simply take it to my bank where I could get the going rate.

I want to sell my scrap gold and buy a gun for hunting. Of coarse I want the best value for my gold and great value for my hunting gun. What do you guys suggest I do with my gold and what do you guys suggest I buy for a gun. Oh by the way we hunted Elk and Moose strictly as I was growing up and nothing has changed.

I'm right handed , never used a scope (always used open sight), was leaning for a tikka t3 or something around that area. Dad uses a winchester 270.

Anyway thanks for reading and thank you even more if your going to give positive advice for a person who's trying to simply feed himself :) heh. ;)

just had a look at the marlin , and I gotta say thats a really nice gun. Much nicer than the winchester i sported as a kid. Can you mount a scope on a lever gun? I kinda wanna get into a scope aswell and I have never seen a lever gun with a scope on it. Thanks for the quick respsonse logan.

You took the words right out my my mouth.....Tikka T3 .30-06 or .308. If you do get ~$3000 for that gold, you will also have enough for a good reliable shotty like a Remington 870 pump.

Enjoy,

This has got to be one of the weirdest reads ever on CGN! "I found gold in my basement"? LOL! Makes me want to look around a little more in mine now! Very nice!
For me, Tikkas are great rifles, but hey if you've got that kind of coin to spend, why not go for a Browning X bolt, Stainless Stalker or even a Sako Hunter Bavarian or Finnlight if you prefer the synthetic. I would top it off with a nice Leupold VX-L scope.
If a lever gun is what you want, have a look at the Marlin XLR or Browning BLR rifles. You can scope either one, and with the Marlin you can use that new Hornady Leverevolution ammo that suddenly turns even your 30/30 into a 200 yard tackdriver.
As for selling gold... no idea.

heres a pic of the gold I found, like I said its scrap gold looks to be spooled and another piece looks like from an old necklace.

What Independent said straight up is that they wont buy it because they simply do not buy gold from citizens. However they informed me to get value its best to make it 1 piece so I can deal directly with my bank who will give me market value. My only concern is I have been told you lose some weight when you melt. I'm very confident that its higher than 22k due to it being tested by a few separate parties. The pawn shop guy was my favorite, because he would say things that I didn't understand or simply just ignore any questions I had. His best quotes were "okay, what do you want for it" me "What's the going rate for 24k scrap gold right now?" silence him "it's 14k and its 132gram"..me "are you sure its not more than 132grams?.silence.... was amazing I know he must deal with desperation and thats how he makes a living but cmon.

Anyway I will keep you guys updated as this its allot of fun and its like an adventure. I will only melt it if bank gives me green light to do so first.

Try these guys if you are in Edmonton:

They are on 118Ave and are a "Live Price" dealer... I have purchased from them but have never sold...

Marlins are side eject so mounting a scope is no different then on a bolt action rifle, if you use quick release rings you can sight the iron sights in close for hunting in the bush or on a stand and reattach the scope for longer distances.

Thanks to everyone for the informative support concerning the gold. I ended up settling for $4,500CDN. I even watched the guy light up when he melted a small piece of the gold and it came back very clear and bright yellow. Now the next part of business is my purchasing of a hunting rifle. I looked at a few things today most notably a Tikka 30-06 and a Savage I don't know much about Savage rifles but can't complain for $800 I suppose.

They were showing me Weatherby Vanguard but I quickly said no, because I don't want one of those hinged trapdoor things.. So the hunt continues for my rifle.
