Looking to get a .22 conversion kit for my M4. What is the best kit out there right now? I know this is subjective but just curious on what the CGNers' consensus is.

TIA

op might want to be able to go back to 5.56/.223 when he feels the need which is understandable.

Frontier is getting these in (complete upper) Chiappa AR15/M4 22LR Conversion Kit

Thanks. How much $$? Any CGN dealers carry it?

Questar has it with one mag for $289.99 on sale. Is this all I need to shoot .22 out of my M4? Just swap in this kit and I am good to go at the range for under $300?

CMMG's drop-in .22 conversion kit with full body magazine.
Additional magazines are available. Questar offers the complete line of Black Dog Machine AR-22 magazines which are compatible with this product. These magazines have a bolt hold open follower... when using the bolt hold open follower the magazine will hold 26 rounds.
For best performance CMMG recommends to use a 36 grain bullet which they claim has proven to be the best choice for function.
NOTE: The PRI Gas Buster handle will not work with the CMMG .22 Conversion Kit.

I have 5 mags for my CMMG .22 LR conversion kit. I use it for practice with my LMT 11.5" SHORTY, with a 1/7" twist. For maximum reliablity, I usually load only 25 rds in each mag. 5 X 25 rds = a pretty long practice session at the range if you are paying attention to each shot

With Winchester Dynapoint 40 Gr copper washed .22 LR ammo, the cheap bulk packs from Walmart or Canuckistan tire, I get my best reliability and accuracy. 2" groups at 25 yds is NOT as good as a decent Ruger 10/22, but more than good enough for cheap AR practice. Reliability is excellent, and I CAN USUALLY MAKE IT THROUGH ALL 125 RDS WITH NO MALFUNCTIONS, but not always.

PS: If you are practising double taps or multiople quick repeat shots, make sure you start and finish off your sessions with a few mags of .223 ammo ....
otherwise if you practice with only .22 LR, YOU MIGHT RESET YOUR REFLEXES FOR THE ZERO RECOIL of the .22 LR AMMO.

Practice with only the .22 LR can make you faster, but it also can make you sloppy on your second and follow up shots.

Thanks for this. I happen to have a nice stock pile of those Dynapoints. :D This keeps getting better.

My vote is in for the SPIKE's .22lr Kit... love it!

+1

I bought mine from Questar. As long as I keep it properly lubed up it works very well with those bulk Winchester packs of 22 you get at Walmart.

Unless you plug the gas tube or use a dedicated upper (with no gas tube) you need to finish off your range session with some .223 to clear out the gas tube.

Is this the same for the CMMG kit?

The Spike's Tactical .22lr conversion kit includes the .22lr bolt and one Black Dog 26 round magazine
Some unique features not found in any other current conversion kits include:
  • O-rings on the chamber adapter to keep the bolt centered in the .223 or 5.56 chamber and to increase the back pressure by sealing the adapter and not allowing so much carbon and gases to blow back
  • The Kit also comes with a solid plug to take the place of your gas tube, for those of you who shoot a lot or want to dedicate your 2.23 or 5.56 upper to .22lr.
  • Of course, these will come with the electroless nickel finish that is on Spike's current dedicated .22lr bolt.
Spike's Tactical test fires and tunes all of the conversions in house but some of the conversions MAY require tuning for your setup, un-notched hammers also work best with them.
