Hey guys today i was out shooting skeet when a downpour decided to roll up on us. we finished the round i lightly and quickly wiped down my 870 express, i like the challenge of a pump in skeet. so i boxed it up and went to the indoor range and shot pistol and rifle. As soon as i got home i opened up my SG case and my 870 was covered in rust....COVERED!!!!!! :owned: . i detail stripped it wiped it down cleaned with solvent and a coarse tooth brush because some of the spots wouldn't come off and oiled it like crazy. Is there anything i can do to prevent this iv heard of baking in Vaseline? please help this is a new 870 and i believe the finish is parkarized. Thanks alot.

Happened to me once, I used a general cleaning solution I had at the time (believe it was gun treatment) get all the rust off, the give the metal surfaces a hardy coat of oil, wrapped it up in cellophane(yea what you wrap sandwiches in) and left it in my safe for a couple months and it never rusted again. Thats my 0.2 cents

I've had good luck with G96, but I've never exposed my guns to a downpour (only light rain so far). It certainly isn't rusting as easily as it used to when I was still using Gunslick/Outers gun oil. YMMV.

Yeah, I use G96 too, and it has staved off the rust on an 870 that is well more than a decade old. Rust on your gun can be removed with fine steel wool, and then a good application of G96. I hunt in rain and snow, and have found the G96 fine for all-weather.

As a side note, G96 has a great smell to it....sort of like a pleasing spice.

Gunzilla...

.. I have a test rifle sandblasted down to the steel (shooting corrosive ammunition), hasn't been cleaned since June, just a light reapplication maybe 3 times. No rust, no other lube used, no failures. All natural ingredients, no chemicals.. Been real popular over seas with the military because it doesn't attract sand/dust, lubricates when wiped completely dry.. We're supplying a few Canadian Police Departments as well. Nothing but positive reviews. Have yet to see or receive a single negative point.

Not saying it's a cure all.. but it's pretty darn close.

Remember that every time you use a solvent like brake cleaner it strips off ALL oil.

Here are a couple comparisons.

Also if you want a thicker coating (heavy oil/grease) then Fluid Film and RIG Gun Grease are excellent.

What do I use?
Eezox, Fluid Film, RIG Gun Grease, and Break Free because it is easier to get than Eezox. .

For exterior "rust control" on my 870 i pre- oil before going out on a trip with 3 in 1 oil. It is a little stickier and heavier than that pure liquid crap that evaporates quickly. A few good rubs of 3 in 1 is good enough.I also take an oil soaked cloth in a ziplock to the range or out in the bush if i need to give a wipe down.My 2 cents...

If you go through the tests I posted, you will notice that not all of the "lubricating" oils are good rust retardants.

The specialized products for preventing rust tend to fare much better. However under less severe conditions, any oil will do just fine.

As someone else said I keep my guns outside surfaces soaked with oil (hoppes or remoil) and they never rust. I've never had a problem with corrosion. Oil is the best thing for metal protection.

My 870 is also parkerized and 5 yrs old. I have used it yearly in the worst weather, rain/sleet/snow.... have dropped it in snow (swivel snapped), and NEVER had any rust. If wet, open action, take trigger assembly out (just two pins) remove any water/condensation with a dry cloth. Let air dry (near a warm vent is good, 1-2 hours if gun is cold), then wipe it down with CLP or similar. My bbl. is rifled, so i run patches to coat it (depending on if you fired it, how many patches and type of solvent). The insides/action always gets a coat of CLP, and outside gets RG96. If your at a hunt camp, you may want to add a boresnake and I always have a dry cloth soaked in Rem oil (light machine oil) in a zip lock bag.

I've used Gunzilla for the last 2 years and find it works very well. I also use it as a bore cleaner and does a good job there as well. The thing I especially like about it is once you clean the bore you don't have to apply oil. Sometimes I'm in a hurry and after shooting I just put a patch down the bore. No problems after a surprize rainfall gets everything wet.

are you using a soft case? they seem to create rust on firearms. I will never use one again. I now use a product called "barricade" and it works great.
