Should I sell my 597 to buy SR-22?

I have a 597 with a synthetic stock, I upgraded the hammer with a VQ one, put a Tasco 2.5-10x40 mil-dot scope on it and a Winchester 13" bipod and got a 30round mag for it. I like the gun it's fun to shoot and is pretty accurate I can do 1" or less groups at 50yards (5shots) if I try.

Now that 597VTR and SR-22 are out I wouldn't mind upgrading my .22 rifle. (only have one and want to keep it that way). I handled both as well as the Baikal and S&W and like Ruger the best.

I always hear that Remington is more accurate than Ruger so I'm wondering how much am I going to give up in accuracy with the SR?

Would you do it? sell the gun and access. and get a SR-22 or keep the 597? AND I know if I get a VTR I can use the same mags and hammer but I just don't like it as much as Ruger so I'd rather keep my gun.

Also another question what would a stock used in VG cond. 597 go for? and how much could I ask for my set up?

I wouldn't. The SR-22 looks hokey to me. It wouldn't be more accurate than your 597 and it's a shell around a 10/22 receiver. If anything I'd get a .22lr kit for an AR15 if you want Style ;). If you want accuracy, DLASK is making tons of 10/22 stuff that looks great.

The SR-22 looks hokey to me.

Same can be said about the VTR597.

I now own a SR22 and like the look of it better than the VTR. I never had a chance to fire a 597 but I assume that it would perform the same as an SR22. Now this past weekend I took out my new to me SR and put 500+rds through it without any FTF or FTE. Accuracy was right on after boresighting the reddot and nailing pop cans out to 50yrds.

IMO the lines of the VTR don't compare at all to the way the SR is made and wins my vote hands down .. but this is just my two cents.

As per the OPs original question ... get an SR and decide for yourself, you can keep whatever one suits your needs.

I guess he wants the tactical look out of the box. I originally was going to buy a 10/22 and then dress it up the way I wanted ... but the SR saved a lot of work for the same price (or more) it would have taken to buy all the parts.

Nothing wrong with the regular 597, although I don;t like the look of a 10/22. I just prefer the AR look. My M4 could use a mini me :D

I wouldn't trade it because i have a remington 597, it shoots super consistent and awesome, the sr-22 wouldn't be any more accurate especially with the red dot compared to your scope, but it does look cooler. The 597 actually looks like a rifle, and the sr-22 looks tactical and is build pretty well actually, it has a strong solid feel to it. I went with my friend when he bought his, you're really only putting extra $$ for looks. But hey it's your choice depends what you want, you can't go wrong with an sr-22 its one of the better .22lr's out there

I have a similar problem. I own a 10/22 and want an SR22....but hear the VTR is more accurate. Also, I can't see ever grabbing the 10/22 when there is a tactical-looking option right beside it. :)

They're both dressed-up versions of more pragmatic designs, whatever strikes your fancy I suppose. All I know is this~when I joined this site, I didn't want any new guns. Now I have a "must have" list with 3-4 guns on it.

damn - I just got my SR22 and I have to say this gun grew on me big time. I hated the banana mags originally, and the look of the gun was not "AR-ish" enough for me ... but I didn't want a restricted .22 and took a gamble on the SR22 by ordering one new.

It showed up this week and I have to say I am pretty impressed ... sure, it's not an AR replica - but after handling it and feeling the weight, the finish, etc. I knew I made the right decision. I would have considered the VTR but I can't get over the handguard being higher than the receiver - it just does not look right to me.

Anyone who is on the fence should pull the trigger on the SR22, once you get it you learn to love it for what it is (fun gun, cheap to shoot, solid construction, non-res plinker, etc) and accept that banana mags rule the country in Canada (none of this 5/10 round limit stuff :p)

If you've already worked over your 597, you're going to lose money on the deal if you sell it. Why not just buy an Archangel kit for it? Opting for a Ruger would be a real step down from the guide-railed, free-floated goodness of the 597!

Muahahahahahaha

Having handled both the VTR and the SR-22 just today, my $$ will be spent on the SR. As in most things that have been around for a long while the SR is supposedly a very slick unit. I personally like the feel of the SR over the VTR and the fact that the one thing I don't like about it, the mag release, can be adressed by buying an extended one or modding the stock one easily enough. I can't say I really like the looseness of the adjustable stock, but if your running any kind of tactical match with transitions from pistol to carbine and back, it would be an asset for sure. Lastly, just pull the bolt open and let it drop on both; the SR even sounds quality!! Just like a big ol' American car.
My .02 cents.
Cheers!!

I can't spend $500-600 on a new gun right now, I'd need to sell mine first. And I agree VTR doesn't look as nice as SR-22.

If it was me I would go with the VTR keep the upgrades from your 597 and sell the 597. VTR's can be had fro under 400.00 tax in Quebec. Better still buy one used from someone on the EE.

That sound like a good Idea

Where does the idea come from that the VTR is more accurate? I have yet to see any objective proof from anyone that it is. There seems to be this persistent myth that the Remington VTR is a better shooter. I have both and I have not found a substantial difference in the accuracy department (after putting in a Volquartsen hammer in the VTR). Each has their preference for ammo but that isn't unusual. They both shoot about the same- based on the groups I have shot from a rest- not what I heard from a guy whose friend owns one.

Take apart a 597 and then take apart the SR22. There is a world of difference in quality and design. My 597 has a piece of heater hose on the barrel where it joins the receiver. Is this the proof that the VTR is a free floated barrel? Don't get me wrong, I like my VTR (after fixing the extractor and trigger). The people who shoot it really enjoy it. But the SR22 is the VTR and more in terms of quality and design-and easily it's equal in accuracy!. Get the SR22 and you will never look back.

I went out and shot my SR22 - this thing is excellent...almost 500 rounds down the pipe, 1 failure to fire which I just racked out and went back to shooting

I don't shoot for pinpoint accuracy, but rather rapid fire, and my groups were pretty good. I have a video and some pics to show later
