My K98 Eagle over swastika proof mark on the left hand side of the reciever has been punched on the wings and the swastika, Anyone know if i can get a steel stamp to re stamp it ? sort of like like a letter punch for steel that you hit with a hammer.

Or maybe someone knows a gunsmith in ontario or quebec that has the stamps?

I think if you restamp it then it is a fake in most peoples eyes. The way it is will probably be a Russian capture and still considered a Nazi rifle. I think restamping will lower it value. IMHO

Numrich used to sell all the Waa and eagle stamps, check them out, most likely still have them. Mitchell's Mausers may have bought all their stock though...

Are you for real? You want to RE-STAMP your K98. Sure, if you want to lower the value, destroy a piece of history, become Bubba and raise the ire of milsurp lovers everywhere.

Mr. Rifle Humper:

Rifle Dies - $200.00

Fake Restamping, your rifle will only be worth about $20.00.

The best way to devalue a rifle!

Priceless!

And Stupid when you get caught!

No one deals with a Faker.

Whoa guys! the stamp is already there!!!! it's just not very legible. i just want to make it legible again!! I am not adding anything, faking anything. And how would i be destroying a peice of history????? they already tried to by punching out the swastika! I am not selling it ether, it's an east german refurb k98. I would just be sort of "re-nazifying it" . Back to what it originally was.

It will still lower the value. FYI

The stamp being original and intact is what makes a good rifle more valuable than yours. To "restore" the stamp is fakery. Also, the repro stamps aren;t perfect - at some point a future owner will discover it's fake-ness and your reputation will be besmirched.

So your saying me trying to restore it to it's original markings is more fake then leaving it the way it's already messed with?

the condition of the proof marks and other marks is what makes a milsurp historic and original.

I have one where the eagle is visible but the swastika is scratched out and a Star of David with Israeli marks is next to it together with the big 7.62 on the receiver. It tells a story: Oberndorf a.N. to the IDF ...
Would never dream of touching this.

If it's an RC, it's an RC. Swastikas were removed in different places at different times.

You could never sell this rifle again.

In a word - "Yes".

The arsenal refurb process your rifle went through is a part of history, peened dirty birds and all. You may have noticed that there are currently no R/C rifles to be had through vendors. On the EE the values are climbing slowly but steadily.

So, not only would "re-stamping" the Dirty Birds or Waffs be the indelible mark of Bubba (Ruining resale as an unmolested rifle) but could reasonably be seen as fraud. Your rifle's value past it's base worth as an R/C k98 is determined by the presence of any extra markings/identifiers that survived the refurbishment process.

Enjoy it for what it is - or use it as a place holder with an eye to replacing it with something more appealing.

Yup!!!

Leave it as it is. WA and Nazi Eagles were removed by those who hated what the NAZIs represented and did. Firearms with such markings intact are considered more desireable to some collectors because of their rarity. Adding them or resorting these marks are altering the history of the gun and thus making them a fake and less valuable once the alterations become know. And it will affect your reputation to those that collect milsurps for their history.

Ask most CGNers that collect milsurps or Milsurp.com members what they think of Mitchell Mausers. Or the garand stocks that have restamped cartouches:

Fake, Fake, Fake!

Instead of ruining a perfectly good RC, sell it to someone who will appreciate it. There are enough bubba'd rifles out there. We don't need another.

Put it on the EE and with the money you get, look for one with the waffs and swazi's intact still.

It's not a russian capture. it doesn't have the shellac, and it's all numbers matching except the reciever. why they mismatched that i dunno, but i guess i wouldn't have been able to afford it if it was completly numbers matching lol. I am understanding now what your saying, i'm pretty lucky to have what i have and don't mess with it, It is truly a beautifull rifle, For the age it is it's in incredible shape. Can't wait to fire a couple of rounds through it once i find some SP euro stuff, hard to find.
Thanks guys!

The repro German stamps arn't anywhere close to original and cry and scream "Fake" when applied to the rifle!

If you think stamping over a peened WaA is going to get you a perfect WaA, Dream On!

You'll just Bugger it up and wish you took an Angle Grinder to it first!

It is not fake as it presently marked, touch it trying to change the markings makes it fake. Please just leave it alone.
