depends if you get restricted or not...id rather take my sks d anywhere i want and not just to the range. cz is great too but i dont like the look of the long pencil barrel on the non restricted.

Unless you are a SKS collector or lover, then I would say the answer to your question is "yes"

The argument of well I could buy 2.5 more crates of ammo for the price of the CZ falls short when you start to think of the number of total crates of ammo you're likely to shoot... what's 2 or 3 out of 30?

One thing to consider with the CZ is that you will find it difficult to keep in in it's original configuration with all the upgrades available out there! When I owned mine I put prolly another $300 into extra accessories like hand guards, and stock and grip. Just something else to consider.

I know if I was to do it again I would get the non restricted folder, and leave it alone!

Another issue for me was the whole corrosive ammo, and cleaning thing! I found myself constantly worrying about rust, and spending at least a 1/2 hour cleaning it after every range trip! Considering I hit the range twice a week this became a pain in the ass! Some say that rust, and corrosion isn't as bad as it is rumoured to be with the corrosive stuff but I live in Southern Ontario right on Lake Ontario and it is humid as f**k all summer long!

This kept me from bringing it out on camping trips, and that was sad considering it was non restricted!

With the CZ I kept thinking I would wake up to find my $800 gun rusted to ####!

With my SKS I really could care less! Ill buy another one if need be, and it has the chrome bore so I feel alot more comfortable leaving it a few days without a cleaning!

This pretty much speaks for itself.

The SKS is a solid gun but the low price is their only outstanding quality IMO, they make for a good beater and plinking mule but the VZ is something that can be compared to sporting semiautos costing a lot more.

One more question for you guys, since there seems to be alot of CZ 858 fans :

???????????Do any of you guys hunt Deer with the CZ 858 (non-restricted)???????????

If you guys use a 5 round magazine, does it make it look a little bit less scary to take deer hunting? Also, does the 5 round magazine make the rifle lighter and easier to carry in the bush? The 30 round mag sure does make the rifle look kind of awkward.

Some of the guys I hunt with use Ruger Mini-30's and Lever action 30-30, but there is one guys with a SKS, so I think that it would be actually cool to bring a CZ 858 along for the annual week long Deer hunt up at the cabin up North. It would definetely be a Eyecatcher.

I find after about 2 to 3 days after a range visit with ~500 rounds down range I can notice the rust powder starting to form. I have not left it any longer than two weeks but it never got any worse than the surface powder. No pitting or flakes.

Cleaning for me, is use a bore snake until the bore comes out clean. Then I run oiled patches down the bore until they come out clean, with the final patching being saturated in oil to leave a coating in the bore. I use the chamber brush and scrub it out with oil, then wipe it out clean, and use a saturated section of towel to recoat the chamber before running the final patch down the bore.

I clean out the piston area with oil and q-tips. I tried boiling water once or twice but found that it simply wasn't needed if the rifle is well lubricated.

I hunt with my 858 and a shorty 5 round mag. It doesn't really affect the usabilty of the rifle but is a few ounces lighter. I keep a 5/30 and a shemagh in the truck for photo-ops. :D

That would make for a nice picture with the guys in my hunting group at the cabin. All guys in camo, orange vests, rifles, and some crazy dude with what appears to be a AK 47.

I like it.

I really love the cz858 just because it looks similar to the ak47. And since my role model is my uncle and he owned one as a child Im very motivated to get one.
Only flaw (I believe) is the barrel. Damn its too long. And you can get the restricted shorter barrel but you cant take it out to shoot stuff with, only to the range.

You can thank Liberals' arbitrary gun laws for that and much more.

buy the CZ ... you will not regret it.

had the SKS and sold it after one shoot at the range.

the CZ is in a different league.:D

Like other guy says try selling your sks compared to the 858 on the EE ....

Problem is people trying to sell their SKS for what it cost new or more. You can get a new russian or china sks for 190-200 yet I see used ones listed for that or more. On occasion a used one will pop up for a realistic price (120-150) and they tend to sell quick in that price range. I see the same thing on the EE with the CZ, guys trying to get 700 for a used one when a new one's the same price.

Top loading semis with stripper clips suck. My 2cents.

Actually I don't mind it. To me detachable 5 round mags is kind of a waste of time. You have to buy multiple mags, load them, then load the mags into the gun. With the stripper clips you pull one loaded with surplus ammo out of your crate and stick it into the top of the gun.

And FWIW I would not even compare a SKS with an aftermarket stock to a CZ-858.

The 858 can be loaded with stripper clips as well...
