Would re-ddoing my SKS stock be bad or devalue it?

The shellac (shiny) finish on the handguard wood is comming off.
I'd like to take the shellac off of it, try to match the stain color and put tung oil finish on it, or possibly a semi gloss finish of some kind.

Would i devalue it? I just don't want the unprotected wood on the hand gaurd to turn black.

Don't know about you, but......

I stripped mine down to the bare laminate, removed it all, then I stained it, sealed it, let it dry, put it back together, and off to the range I went

Is it worth more, is it worth less, I really don't care, I paid under 200 bucks for it, to shoot it, I really don't think I am going to make money on it, even if I didn't do a damn thing to it....

That's my story and I am sticking to it....

It's going to be a long time, before most of the Chinese and Russian surplus SKS rifles, actually start to increase in value. If the supply, of cheap aurplus ammunition dries up, they will be even cheaper.
We're going through a collectors phase right now. This isn't the first one. Hopefully, it won't be the last one. After the 303Brit surplus dried up, the rifles couldn't be given away, the same went for the first bunch of Mosins that came into the country 30 years ago. Mind you, they came in without ammunition and were in well used/abused condition.

If you can afford two rifles, put one away, for your kids or a rainy day. You will have to wait a long time. Refinish the other one, any way you like and shoot it, while the ammo supply lasts.

yea good point, buy another one and screw with it, and keep the other one original. I was at a friend of my dads the other day, he's a unadvertised gunsmith, and a VERY good one, and he showed me the scopes he's putting on the sks's and they look pretty cool! and they hold there sighting as well.

There are enough of them in the country right now that they aren't going to skyrocket in value very soon. On the other hand, who knows what Obama, Ottawa and the UN have up their collective sleeves? This just COULD be all we will ever see.

Remember the FAL: Canada's front-line defence in the Cold War. At first could could buy them off the rack, then they were Restricted but the Gummint PROMISED that "all we had to do was register them". But you won't need a permit to move one and you can still hunt with it.

THEN came the permits to move them. AND the prohibition on hunting with them. But they will never be Prohibited. After all, the Government PROMISED that.

THEN they were Prohibited. But the Government won't interfere with the shooting sports: after all, they PROMISED that.

And THEN you couldn't even take them out of the house. So much for the Solemnly Pledged Word Of The Government Of Canada.

Buy two: one to play with while they are still legal and a pristine one to drool at until the Ottawa Stormtroopers show up to take it.

Do I sound cynical? I guess so: I'm one of those suckers who carted around a C1 during the Cold War, protecting the incompetent liars in Parliament along with the few honest ones.

Sure be nice if a couple hundred thousand just got lost in all that paperwork. Then we could all Do Our Patriotic Duty and line up to re-register them!

I'm looking forward to my first sks! It'll be fun to strip it down and try out all sorts of paint schemes on it. (any suggestions on what type of paint would be really helpful!)

Thanks.........:D

I like the look of yours as well,,,,,I just have way to much plastic already....wanted something with some resemblance to wood....I think I will strip it down again, and go with an even darker stain, just to see how it looks, maybe black......

Mebbe I should just give up on everything, paint mine all over with "peace" signs and smliling daisies and quotes from The Bright Red Thoughts of the Wisdom of Chairman Mao Tse-tung. The Commies and cowards and Liberals will NEVER figure out that I`m not one of Them!

BTW, exactly what is "Urban Camo"? You paint the rifle to look like a drunk urinating in an alley? Or you paint it to look like a sushi bar? (Nobody would ever notice all the SKSs and Norinco 305s lining up for sushi because they`re all camouflaged!) (Sushi: what everything you say sounds like when you have your mouth full of raw dead fish.)

This forum is WEIRD.

Unless you have a rare collector's item, you don't have much to lose. If you do a good job the value will actually increase.

And yes, please do paint sushi, French fries, playboy bunnies, Jesus fish, zombies, Martians, hello kitties, anything but another camo pattern.

People want more for my SKS than ever.

There's a full post on my blog about the stock refinishing a while back, then a newer post about the leather stock cover.

You can do two things:

You can chemically strip, buff with 00 steel wool, followed by 0000 steel wool, then 2 to 3 coats of tung oil, OR

You can remove the stock and put on a plastic stock.

I have done both, and love them both. My laminate stock looks like brand new.

I wouldn't change anything, I wouldn't shoot it either, like other rare collectibles, they are worth alot more unfired.

As I have posted previously, the easy way to remove the original shellac finish is with alcohol. Best to use 95% ethanol rubbing alcohol (available at some pharmacies).
Regular strength alcohol will do, but will be slower.

The shellac comes right off - use lots of rags. No toxic fumes.
