CZ 858...Is it worth the extra $$$ over the SKS.

I have a Scout mount on mine. The problem with that is if you're cleaning you're rifle and you need to get at the gas pistol, you have to remove the mount (or chop off a chunk from your cover) and remount it. I use a Bushnell Trophy Red Dot, and it's pretty good, except I have to spend time at the range every time I go rezeroing.

I also tried mounting a cheap low powered scope onto the Scout mount, and the eye relief is way to far for my liking, also the scope got in the way of ejecting shells so the scope took a few dings.

I have a yugo sks, 2x norinco sks, a cz858 and a (restricted) vz58. i was at the range a few weeks ago with my cz and vz and i had the cheap surplus ammo. nobody was more suprised than myself when i was able to hit the 850 meter gong with iron sights on both rifles. for the price IMO, you can't do better. great rifle, comes with mags, etc, the ammo is dirt cheap and they work well. if they came with rails all over nobody would buy AR-15s

I put the NEA rail/AR adapter on my CZ and it's really nice, it's shame that I had to get rid of my fab arms stock with buffer, THEREFORE I would not recommend the NEA scope mount without pointing out the disadvantages. The fab arms stock is just the best available for the CZ, so the next time I would just put a POSP scope with rail on my CZ.

I am glad that Wolferine decided to offer the rail as a standard on the new CSA rifles, big reason for me to order one, I just slide one of my POSP scopes onto the rail.

Tea Pot2 (he is a sponsor, not sure what the company name is) here on CGN offers nice low profile rail adapters for the POSP scopes/SKS, you can have a gunsmith mount the adapters for maybe $50 to your SKS and you are good to go. I think the scopes are around $300 but well worth the money.

There are no short cuts when it comes to scopes for the SKS or CZ, don't make the mistake of mounting a red dot, even the magnified ones are only good for up to 50 yards unless you have eagle eyes.

The other solution is to mount a choate scope mount on your SKS, it's also around $50 bucks from SKSman and you can mount almost any scope to it.

sks is smelly, old... great for those who like to collect. there are probably millions of these sks's (?seems like it), just another rifle.

Does SKSman ship that mount to Canada? it is in USA....

BTW, I have been search internet for such a mount in Canada but can not find one.

The Fab telescopic plastic butt stock with the spring "buffer" is an okay stock, but not the best. The adjustable LOP is a great feature, but that's available in a much higher quality with an AR adaptor and M4-type telestock.

I have no problems hitting 12" plates out to 200m with an unmagnified red dot. Beyond that, it's the dot size and my own ability that limits me, not the lack of magnification. I certainly do not have eagle eyes.

12" plates at 200 yards? You are kidding, right!

Even I don't need a scope for that.

.

The real proof of how good the 858 is. All other members of the USSR had to convert to the AK47, except the Czechs who kept using the 858's grandaddy.
I hated my SKS for shooting, love the 858, but it doesn't have a chrome lined barrel unless you get the VZ model.

I have both: A 1953 Tula SKS and CZ 858. The 858 is more of a utility gun for me, while the SKS is more like my 1940 Kar98K: A collecting gun for historical interest.

The 858 is a well designed, well built, dependable weapon
in it's original format. If you can afford it go for it. As for
hunting the 858 and SKS both work well for deer and smaller
game, although i believe the 7.26x39 round looses to much
energy out past 125 yards and consistent accuracy diminish
as well. Trying to harvest game at that range with either rifle
is iffy at best and not humane.
Back to the original question..
My choice would be the SKS $200, A fixed 6x scope or red dot
and a drill and tap mount $150 or so, a case of ammo $200 and
$250 for a decent side arm. I.M.H.O.

A couple more question for all of you CZ 858 owners :

1. What kind of groupings do you guys do @100 yards ? and is that with open sights?

2. Is there any good replacement sights for the CZ, such as Williams Firesights?

3. Are the SKS sights interchangeable with the CZ sights, since they look the exact same?

4. If the CZ sights are different from the SKS, are the CZ sights better than the SKS?

You're the guy that made the "50 yards" comment.

Are trolling and baiting your new hobbies? :kickInTheNuts: Thanks for admitting the "information" you put in your posts is bulls**t.

You are the one insulting people, calling me ### and bashing minorities, remember?

I am talking about serious shooting, not hitting a one foot gong at 200 yards, at 50 yards I want to be able to hit below MOA with a CZ 858, 100 yards should be 1 to 2 inch, 200 yards below 5 inch, all with surplus ammo, much better with reloading. Don't tell people that a red dot is perfect for 200 yards just because you have one. I mean, I can shoot better with my 22 and Tasco scope, LOL.

Different strokes for different folks.

This post clearly shows your attitude, you are not used that people are not backing down, are you? Common strategy for trollers like you is calling other people names. Joke.

A couple more question for all of you CZ 858 owners :....

I can tell you this much. I'm consistantly hitting a head sized steel gong at aprox 300 meters with only the factory sights (and a spotter with binoculars or scope). I'd say that's pretty good considering my limited amount of trigger time. I prefer the factory sights on the 858 over many other sights on my other guns. The only way I could see improving it is by adding a scope with magnification. The factory sights are bang on on mine.
