Shooting a Magpie

are there some rules on posts like this?

something like:
gophers/crows/yotes=cool to blast and brag about
magpies(aka kittens of the sky)= not cool

just want to be sure on the next post like this, I know what side of the fence to be on.

That made me laugh.

To the topic at hand, I don't believe that personal attacks on anyone are called for here. I know if I made a mistake (on purpose or not) calling me names would just make me mad and defensive.
Maybe it wasn't the right thing to post the event here, or maybe it could have been worded more eloquently, but so what? What's done is done. It's bad enough he would be flamed by the anti's, but from us as well?

yeah post 51, Hopefully it was not a threat but the OP was obviously getting flustered and people have done stupider things. Read it like a ganster saying "hey be careful you might have an accident"

are you refering to post #51?

any logical person can easily see that he didnt threaten anybody in that post.

gear down, big rig!!

Its not a good thing to put on the net...pure and simple...

that wasnt what was being discussed. there was no threat made..pure and simple.

he was commenting on the fact that you seem to be getting very heated over an internet argument and need to relax (probably not a good thing to be putting on the net)

I think the only thing he did wrong here was post it in a public forum. Anyone with enough hunting experience knows that sheeite happens sometimes. Stomping on a magpie isn't any different than finishing off a duck or goose by ringing it's neck. It isn't pleasant but it's the quickest and most humane way to dispatch the animal. Nobody bats an eye when they splat a blood-filled mosquito on their arm. I'm sure he wasn't aiming for the beak.

the OP made no indication that he was possibly considering physically harming icehunter.

if anything, they could be taken as he was going to report icehunter to the authorities....here is his comment again, show me where im wrong.

No wounds here.

Not sure what you are getting at, but there seems to be much aggression, hate and anger in your posts. I'm starting to think that you are possibly a candidate whom should not own any firearms. If I were you I'd be careful as you may have your firearms taken away. I recommend that you judge yourself accordingly.

Like I said in my first post some things are better left unsaid. We all have hunting stories we are not proud of. I've wounded animals myself, and dispatched them in the quickest and most humane way possible. But it's not something I bragged about.

It's a life lesson that we all hope you learned from.

Heavy breathing and unsteady gun....find something to rest gun on.
Wounded animal.... dispatch it quickly

Kevguy the biggest problem with your post was the way it was presented to us, and the anti hunting crowd.

Move on and get out hunting again.

Good luck

i thought the biggest problem with his post is that he disagreed with their hypocritical assessment.

i dont hunt at all, yet i see nothing wrong with him quickly stomping the bird as opposed to taking the time to load his gun. he had no intention of eating it and it is considered vermin.

also, tree huggers should be happy that he didnt put another piece of lead into the ground and anti hunters should be happy that there was one less bullet travelling through the air.

And either do I. I've used this method and also wringing the neck and a couple of other methods.

Big deal. I've shot dozens of starlings for non-eating reasons. Not every shot was perfect. They're a non-native species and I'm allowed to kill them in Ontario, and I will.

Am I giving hunters a bad name by doing it? Hmm? Is destroying an invasive species a bad thing?

Well Well, MR ...First off that post was in poor judgement, second off your not in the position to judge who should or shouldnt own firearms. 3 rd...how do you know I own any firearms?? 4th...you made a threat against me now...Go ahead and make a call..I welcome a visit from the proper authorities...shall I make tea for them and biscuits??

Sounds like you got something to hide.

Sounds like there is an undiscovered group of hunters who eat magpies, gophers and who knows what else, all in the name of eat what you kill.

All of these animals are first headshot so they don't suffer any more than necessary. I suppose that is the ethical thing to do.

This discussion is interesting in that it reveals there are two extremes: one I'd call a "farmer" mentality, of "I don't care how, but the varmint must die", and sometimes, that ain't pretty. The other is the more educated, sophisticated hunter that has higher ideals, perhaps more likely to have a more urban (there I said it, flame on) background.

So, to save a bullet he stomped the magpie. Kind of messy. Raises ones hackles, doesn't it? But is there any real difference? He ended it's misery quickly, isn't that the point. Oh I forgot, ethical hunters never miss. He deserves a beating for almost missing and not making a good shot.

Well, I spent lots of time on the farm growing up, and I say, stop beating up on us farmer types. One less magpie is one less magpie, and that's a good thing.

And to you other farmer types out there, be careful what you post, since you will be pounded thoroughly if you don't meet standards.

Personally, I would have went for a body shot, since the head is a small target at 25 yds. If you used hollow points, it should do the job nicely. And then you wouldn't have to eat it.

Think of all the abuse you would have saved yourself if you had done that. Well, maybe.

yup.( just like you should have)..The fact that you posted a unethical hunting decision in a forum...and for that you had to post,,,you just made all, hunters, varmint shoters and the majority look bad..for that i hang my head in shame and hope that tomorrow it gets better.U already stated that your crosshairs were wavering.etc..U shouldnt have taken the shot and even if youi did..dont post it in a public forum...real simple to understand,,,

By the way...when the cops showing up on my doorstep??

I'm pretty happy there's one less magpie in Alberta. I see one I shoot one , same with gophers . I'm a Terrible person but I sleep good without noisy magpies outside my window
