Need a fast answer for a Dumb question

If guys are doing it with .223 and .308 palma bullets, why not? Maybe not ideal, but the bullet will certainly go that far. A big issue may be the rifles throat and twist rate for the heavy bullets.

115 berger or DTAC is as good as most heavy 6.5 bullets, better than most 30 cals, and on par with the uber greasy 90 grain 223 berger.

It is absolutely capable of long range precison, but with the action and bolt, I would opt for someting other than the 243. The 6XC, 260, or even the 6BR/dasher. Why, just because there is this personal aversion to that cartridge.

as mentioned i will rebarrell eventually likely to .260

but for now just wanting an all rounder that i can target and varmint with

Most 243 factory barrels have slow twists with 90 to 95gr bullets the max weight you can toss. Not bad but not great. Certainly plenty good for plinking.

Saw a few Savage 243's shoot quite nicely at 1000m and these bullets. got bounced around but was decently accurate at that distance.

Bonus with this cal is you can burn out the throat fast so you will be onto the barrel you want in the first place.

Now if you did get a Savage, you can spin on whatever chambering you want.

Wow, lots of people don't know much about the 243 that is for sure. :(

The .243 is an excellent long range cartridge. Take a look at the ballistics, a .243 with the right bullet has more velocity and more energy at the muzzle than a .308 and that carries all the way to 1000 yds and beyond where the .243 still smokes the .308 for energy.

If the 6BR can set world records at 1000 yds then who here thinks the .243 can't perform at that range? Anyone? ...... Buehler?

I shot a .243 to nearly 1900 yds. Try THAT with a .308.

While irrelevent to the OP's question, the world is long overdue for an ultra-high BC 6mm bullet. the "90 grain 223 berger" cartridge of the 6mm world. The problem with the 243 is that bullets have not lived up to the cartridge's potential, and what you have left is an overbore inefficent catridge that lacks the inherent accuracy of the 6BR, Dasher, XC and even the 6-22-250. At least the 6mm Remington is so rediculously overbore, that it can;t help but make you smile, but imagine that mated to a 130 grain 6mm VLD with a G1BC as good as the 7mm 180!

I know very well that this flames 243 lovers and the cartridge has done great long distance things, but it aint my cup of tea...

So hypothetically would you suggest a Krieger 1 in 8 for a 243 to do the job with the 115's ( I hear there a ##### to shoot correctly), even though we all know its a barrel burner. I ask only because inquiring minds want to know,and as my name inplys........I LOVE MY REMY 243.

Cheers

I seriously was going to have a 243 built and order a Kreiger 243 barrel with a 1-8 twist. I was shooting a factory 243 at the time and loved it. But alas my smith talked me into chambering it in 6mmBR and I am so glad I did.
243=good
6mmBR=EXCELLENT
:D
