Shooting a Magpie

I'm reading this thread for entertinment from the seat of my dirtbike in the rain waiting for a friend to come jumpstart my truck that's 25 km in the bush. I'd almost be embarrased to be of the same ### and species as some of the whiney old grannys crying about the guys ethics and how he comes across. Here's a tip... It's the Internet, get over it, go do some good for humanity, organize an ethical hunting march. For crying out loud he might not even own a gun or hunt. For all we really know he posted it for fun to ruffle your skirts. Mabey he's an anti, trying to divide us.
Men, or ladies... Wipe away the tears, turn off the computer and find somthing important to do.

Dirt bike in the rain. Apparently on the internet on a dirt bike in the rain. Guess we know why your nuts are fuzzy.

Dry 'em off so they don't get so mouldy.

Judging by the time of your post... I'd say your friend is not coming back... got some pop corn?

He's coming, I had to ride to phone reception. Got an I phone, Internet anywhere there's cell service. He had to come 50 km or so

yup.( just like you should have)..The fact that you posted a unethical hunting decision in a forum...and for that you had to post,,,you just made all, hunters, varmint shoters and the majority look bad..for that i hang my head in shame and hope that tomorrow it gets better.U already stated that your crosshairs were wavering.etc..U shouldnt have taken the shot and even if youi did..dont post it in a public forum...real simple to understand,,,

Like I said, I'm glad you are here to tell everybody how to conduct their business. What would we ever do without you?

I'm noticing a trend here. The guys from Alberta and Sask who have experience varminting in the west pretty much think this is a non-issue and just one less Magpie.

The "sophisticated" eastern guys who have no experience varminting in the wild west and who would never consider shooting an animal except to eat and almost feel the need to apologize for it even then, seem to think some heinous crime has been committed.

I don't know the OP personally but we do spend a lot of time shooting gophers and magpies and practically anything else wandering around the fields of Southern Alberta. Anyone with any experience in these matters will have experienced less than instantly lethal hits. It happens all the time. Sometimes we shoot again, sometimes the varmint crawls back down its hole trailing its guts. Sometimes we step on its head to put it out of its misery. I have crushed more than a few skulls under my boot.

Anyone who thinks that less than instantly lethal hits are a result of poor marksmanship is invited to come out and show us just how good a shot they are. I guarantee you will get a lesson in marksmanship from just about anyone who has spent any time in a gopher field. There are some seriously skilled riflemen in the fields of Southern Alberta.

Would people be cool if I said that there were 15 kittens roaming around my grandma's house meowing because their mothers were hit by a car. And since they wouldn't make it through winter I figure the best thing to do would be to put them out of their misery. But after the 14th one I was really tired and breathing hard. I figured "What the heck, they are just pests. And took the shot on the last one." I don't make a good shot and my .308 blows the kittens jaw off. Not feeling like wasting $0.75 on an animal that is not going anywhere fast I just walk up and step on it's head.

I had an experience not unlike this. We were out at a friend's farm and our Jack Russel Terriers were rooting around behind the hay stack when they dragged out a kitten. This cat was so young its eye's were not even open yet. By the time I got the kitten away from our dog it was in no kind of shape. Not quite dead yet, I did the right thing and put it out of its misery under the heal of my boot. Did I enjoy that? No of course not but there was no other option and as the farmer had spent the morning drowning kittens in a bucket of water there was no way they were going to suddenly rush to the vet and spend $3000 to save this kitten's life.

Pic of one of my dogs with a gopher. The really gross part is when the dog crushes the gophers skull in its teeth. They don't break the skin but you can hear the bones cracking.

Been there and done all that (shot the lower jaw off a few gophers that made it to the hole before the follow up -- they didn't go easy). But it was never the opening line of a thread of mine. Why did the OP start on this tack rather than talking about an unsucessful/successful grouse hunt instead? He coulda said, " I shot a magpie", but felt he needed to add the details, which weren't really needed unless your intent was to stir the pot (see my sig.).

This goes beyond a simple killing a of a ####bird. It has become theater.

This is a troll thread. If it didn't start that way, the OP is taking it in that direction now.

And everyone who flamed him. They are no better. All the OP did was tell a story. It takes two to tango.
I see no-one flaming the fellow who pulled the duck's head off, everyone laughed about it. No less brutal than a stomp to the head. If I was to criticise him, does he deserve to be banned after an arguement?

I think not.

I'm just sad that this thread went so sideways.

No wounds here.

Not sure what you are getting at, but there seems to be much aggression, hate and anger in your posts. I'm starting to think that you are possibly a candidate whom should not own any firearms. If I were you I'd be careful as you may have your firearms taken away. I recommend that you judge yourself accordingly.

Has nothing to do with his story, just the fact that he said he was capable of reporting the other member for being a threat and have his firearms taken away. That right there is BS.
Some don't like what he had done or just the fact that he had posted what he had done with a magpie. And I couldn't care less about that (f**k the magpie) but threatening to report someone to the police or what ever is a pussy thing to do (unless you feel true harm may come to you by such a person) If its just cause he got under you skin bug off and read something else.

Stop putting words into my mouth. I make one statement and you and others jump to paranoid comments and conclusions about cops and $hit. It is interesting on how you plant a small seed how it grows out of control with what people think it implies. Like I said, it makes me think what some people have to hide.

Dogs seem to make it more fun, my westie hasnt nailed too many on his own, but loves toting my kills around for a while, and when motivated, can be a pretty effective excavator.

Now, how many of the critics here hunt migratory birds? How many of you have crippled a goose and left it beacause another flight of birds was inbound? How many of you administer another load of shot to dispatch the bird, rather than walking out, or having your dog go out and bring it back so you can wring its neck? If so, you are no better than the OP, unbunch your panties and find something that is really worth #####ing about.

are there some rules on posts like this?

something like:
gophers/crows/yotes=cool to blast and brag about
magpies(aka kittens of the sky)= not cool

just want to be sure on the next post like this, I know what side of the fence to be on.

I'm still a relatively low post count on here, and would love a copy of the official list also, lest I stray from it and suffer the wrath.

Agreed. Can we also get an official list on the "approved method" for dispatching wounded game? I'd hate wing a goose and have my dog bring it back, only to have to hit it with a 12 guage 3" BB again from 2 feet away because wringing it's neck is not on the approved list...

If all the bleeding hearts in this thread are so in love with magpies, their going to cry their heads off when I tell my tale of killing every magpie, who your almost certain will be all family at one time. My Browning was fully loaded and I dispatched every single bird in that roost. I even had one come right at me, shot it from tha air. I was on a hill shooting into the valley so no, their not going to take my rifle for unsafe practices.

Or I could tell the tale of a less then spectacular hit on a running gopher. It blew his guts out the far side, but it was the last shot in my rifle. (Damn unethical killer I am, hunting with only one shot) By the time I had another round in the chamber he dragged himself into a texas gate. I was now on the other side of the gate when he dragged himself out the other side, still trailing his guts behind him. I'm a bad, bad man.

All of this about a magpie? Really?

While I would agree that the OP was not written well, or tastefully - it's a magpie.

Flying rat.
