Your friend and mine, the Grey Squirrel

Just like a rabbit. Cut around the rear legs above the knee, then up to the butt down each leg. Peel skin down the rear legs and continue to pull it off the animal like a sock. Once the skin is off. Cut off the head and feet. Open the belly (careful not to poke the guts) and pull out the contents.

Do a search on the net, there are a few good tutorial videos.

Cook them low and slow, enjoy.

Good luck!

there is not much meat but they actually taste really good. I just gut em, skin em, and cook them over a fire right there. People say grose but try it ! good stuff.

I just use a shot gun. 12g with small bird shot. #6 or something. leaves everything intact. a smaller gun would be nice but.... well a 12 is what i have. my 22.cal always blows them away 2.

What's the best way to gut a grey squirrel? I tried recently and made a dog's breakfast of it. (literally). so much so that I pretty much rendered the rest of it unusable.
have a friend toss it into the air while u blast away with 00 buck
those guys are vermin and an introduced speices here in bc

My "friend" the gray squirrel ? I wonder how many times I sat on a deer watch in Ontario with one of those damned things sitting 10 ft above me in a tree chirping it's damned head off for HOURS !!!!! Definately NOT my friend. I'm no help cleaning them. They're tree rats to me as well.

friggen mice as well. had one the other day keep running up and nipping my boot as i was sitting in my stand.

Tube skin them... just like the advice given above.

My friend near in the US gets about a half dozen, tosses them (gutted) into a crock pot with beer and bbq sauce and lets them stew for about 6 hours while he goes to find some more. When he gets back, he debones them and then toss in some rice and veggies. Or, just serves it like pulled pork on a bun.

I've never tried it but he says it's just like bbq pork when done like this.

Its just because it's cute and furry, and part of the rodent family... whats not appetizing about that? hahaha never tried it simple because it's not a common thing to eat and may have rabies.. but I am curious, anyone have squirrel recipes and dinner pics?

What he said. There are also a few recipies for them in the recepies section. Squirrels are abundant here, and grouse numbers are declining. In the intrest of grouse preservation, I'm also going to try squirrel this year.

best way to skin'em is buy carefully cutting around the back legs and tail and pull skin over head, like a sock.
best way i like To cook em is by quartering about 6 to 10 of them and boiling in salted water for about 40 min' and take them out to cool, meat will fall of the bone.
toss bones away keep meat.
makes for good sandwich meat. similar to pulled pork.
mix up with your favorite BBQ sauce and off you go.
tastes like wwabit.

ummm...rodents including squirrels dont carry rabies. They do have Tularemia (as do wabbits) and maybe even bubonic plague (ok, their fleas do) - but not rabies.
In Ecuador we eat guinea pigs - roasted they are some fine fare. Squirrel aint that much different. This is a left over from the Inca empire days when that was the main source of protein for the "poor". I draw the line at opossum though!
But never pass up pu**y :D

I like squirrel, everyone kept saying ewww but as I was cooking it everyone kept asking what that fantastic smell was. There are some glands that need to be removed. I learned from a cookbook how to gut and skin and remove the glands. I'm sure you can find a diagram somewhere.

i shot 40 this summer and didnt even attempt to eat a single one, or feed one to a dog, clipped off 8 of the nicer tails for souveniers but thats all, they are vermin to me
searching youtube i found a couple good vids real quick about skinning and prepping them, looks easy but im still not expecially interested in eating them

I think its the best meat going. They live on nuts, how bad could they be. They are a pain to skin, but I love a good meal of the little buggers.

Peel them like a sock, then gut. The worst part is picking all the little fine hairs off. I bread them and deep fry them in southern chicken breading..... Tastes just like KFC original recipe... MMMMMMmmmmmm..... :D

for less fur on the meat i like to cut off the feet, tail, and head before removing the hide. if you do it this way there is no chance of contamination as once you remove the hide there is no fur around to get on the meat.

ill likely shoot a couple dozen this year for the table. those who dont eat it are really missing out on some good eats. mmmm....shake n bake deep fried squirrel:D
