If I had a new SKS that I wanted to make it as light as possible, to use for hunting, what is the best way to make this Porky Gun look like its been eating Lean Cuisine?

I know about removing the bayonet, and grinding off the bracket, but is there a really light modern stock out there that makes a big difference? I don't think that the factory original wood stock is that heavy to begin with.

Is it impossible to make this gun lighter by 1-2 lbs, since it is built so strong?

You might try to find a fibreglass stock off a Chinese SKS and give that a try. I know the one I saw was pretty much hollow so you might see some weight reduction there.

Other than that I'm not sure what you can do.

Blueflash, I've had several different synthetics on my SKS, and I have found the factory wooden one to be the lightest and best balanced. Certainly, removing the bayonet really lightens it up, and I think it makes for more balanced, quick handling too.

Hope this helps.

Easy 2lbs

- SKS = 8.50 lb

- VZ 58 = 6.42 lb

Sell the SKS, buy a VZ and you shave a hair over 2lbs right there.

;)

Shy of chopping the bayo and going to a tupperware stock, it is what it is. Removing the bayo is the fastest, easiest weight reduction.

:D:pOr, you can stop eating donuts and spend a little time working out so that a day of humping around an sks doesnt make you whine like a guy who needs to work out but instead wants to shave weight off a 50+ year old rifle.

Why not buy a lever gun for hunting?

hahaha, if you cant live without your donuts, removing the bayonet is the only real change I would make. I found plastic toy stocks make the rifle too muzzle heavy to appreciate any weight loss. But my SKS-D with the cleaning rod tensioner and no bayo felt so much lighter than my factory 306 with spike bayo just due to the muzzle weight it adds. The wood is not heavy, and with the bayo removed it handles great.

The only reason to remove lbs from an SKS would be if the hunter was somehow physically limited to carry it. A person with a disability, or slightly built youth or slender woman might feel "lumbered" by an 8-lb rifle, and might feel less tired at the end of the day. That feeling of course would go away as soon as they got belted by the recoil of a very light rifle. As an experienced shooter and hunter, you aren't doing them many favours letting them get gun shy or punched unnecessarily.

In my experience, recoil is not felt in the field, report is not heard in the field and after a successful hunt all aches and pains feel like well-earned trophies.

If a little 100lb Vietcong soldier could hump one through the jungle for months trying to hunt PEOPLE, you should be able to manage one for a couple days. If your buddies taunt you about having an old, heavy gun, here's a tip: Club 'em with it once. If they live, they'll quit taunting you.

Use the stairs.:D
do daily push up on hourly rate.

yup, ol' russian proven in combats arms, except this one, short lived due to ak47

I don't need to lighten up the rifle because I can't handle the weight of a SKS. Heck, I already own a M14, so compared to that, it is light.

I just wanted to make a ultimate bush gun. And I don't like lever actions, thats why I just sold one.

I will probably just keep the Bayonet off it and throw a Tapco stock onto it with a front grip handle, so I can carry it all day long and its balanced. Knowone really NEEDS a light rifle, but theres a reason Tikka makes a pretty good business selling light rifles. Its because everyone likes to hunt with a light rifle.

I Find them quite balanced and shootable the way they are. I don't have a reason to change anything. They aren't heavy in comparison to other rifles. Personally, if I started to find it heavy, it would be time for me to hit the gym once in a while. Having that said, the bayonet is kind of useless, even the blade bayos are not really much of a usefull blade. I'm sure you can save a pound by taking it off, I've taken off most spike bayonets on the ones that I shoot with, but not the collector rifles. The chinese ones, i take the bayos off the day I get them.
